The name is in all caps COVID-19 which leads me to question it’s meaning. I assume each letter stands for something; it’s an acronym. Right? Several possibilities have come to mind. (Read to the end and I will provide the documented answer but first I am compelled to share my interpretation of what it means.)

C is for Callous.

Callous is synonymous with heartless, unfeeling and cold-hearted. All seem like appropriate adjectives for a virus that is taking over the world one country at a time, wreaking havoc, destroying economies and killing innocent people. Adolf Hitler is recorded in history as one of the most callous leaders. He killed or orchestrated the killing of 11 million people. He showed no leniency for age, sex, health or disabilities. In fact, the weak were the first to die. The commonalities are obvious. If COVID was a person, its face would resemble the callous leader of the Nazi Party in WWII, Adolf Hitler.

O is for Oppressive

Cruel, tyrannical, unfair, and harsh are words that define oppressive. North Korea provides an example of an oppressive dictatorship. As a government, they own the label as the country with the worst human rights record in the world. The restriction placed upon the people limit employment, travel, and personal security. Reports state that the country’s leader Kim Jong-Un killed close associates and family who disagreed with his rule and associate him with massacres of his citizens. His reputation paints him as a brutal man whose abuses his power to control through repressive, unjust policies. If COVID was a government, it would function as North Korean.

V is for Vengeance

Richelle Goodrich wrote in The Tarishe Curse, “Vengeance is a monster of appetite, forever bloodthirsty and never filled.” When someone requires vengeance, they crave revenge and retaliation, never satisfied but instead always seeking to inflict pain. Greek Mythology tells a story about King Sisyphus’ punishment for tricking the god Zeus. After the god sentenced the king to death, Sisyphus thought himself smarter and attempted to escape his punishment. Zeus became so outraged that he sentenced Sisyphus to push a boulder up a hill and positioned it to roll back down when it reached the peak, thereby requiring him toil through eternity. Currently, there are no explanations, action plans, or answers of how to stop the spread of the deadly virus. It continues to overtake bodies, cities and towns without relief in sight. If COVID paralleled a myth, it would be the story of King Sisyphus.

I is for Insidious

In the story of garden of eden, Eve was tempted by the insidious snake to take a bite of the apple. She gave into temptation impacting the world forever. The snake now stands as a symbol for treachery, sinister behavior, stealthy movement, and danger. When the coronavirus appeared, it slithered around freely, often undetected while under our feet. It quietly grew and multiplied until the world was infested and infected. Even now that it is recognized by all people, through devious means it tempts us to let our guard down, think we are in control, and by providing choices manipulates us to be subjects to its control. If COVID was an animal, it would be a snake.

D is for Disease

The world is sick. Humans are infected and dying. Governments are embroiled in conflicts. Leaders fight an unseen enemy and then turn on themselves. The world is sick. COVID is a deadly disease.

COVID is a callous, oppressive, vindictive, insidious disease that is infecting all aspects of life.

If the world bands together, combines resources, and wages a unified battle, hope for victory remains a possibility. During WWII, the allied forces dominated the axis. Historically, democracies reign supreme. We cannot allow ourselves and our children to be sentenced to a life of continual isolation and frustration. Our world can heal if people, leaders and governments unite to fight a common enemy!

Together we did. Now, Together we can.

Note: COVID-19 is an acronym. In its full form, COVID-19 stands for coronavirus disease of 2019.
