Common Methods of Tooth Restoration
In this article, we have gathered the most important methods of tooth restoration.

When a tooth is damaged, decayed, or missing, this can lead not only to aesthetic problems but also to chewing difficulties, shifting of adjacent teeth, and a decline in overall oral hygiene. Modern dentistry offers numerous solutions to restore both the appearance and function of a tooth. In this article, we have gathered the most important methods of tooth restoration.
1. Tooth filling
A filling is one of the most common methods of tooth restoration when the tissue damage is not too extensive. A filling is usually placed after treating cavities. The dentist removes the damaged tissue and fills the resulting cavity with a special material.
Modern filling materials are durable and can be matched to the natural color of tooth enamel, so the restored tooth doesn’t look like it was repaired. The treatment usually requires only one appointment and quickly restores the tooth's shape and function. However, it is important to know that a standard filling may not be sufficient in cases of severe decay. In such cases, dentists can suggest other restoration options.
2. Aesthetic restoration
Aesthetic restoration is used to repair chips, cracks, and irregularities on the front teeth, as well as to alter their appearance. Modern composite materials are applied to the tooth layer by layer and sculpted to achieve a natural result.
This method can correct tooth shape, conceal enamel defects, close small gaps between teeth, and restore an attractive smile. Aesthetic restoration is particularly common on the smile teeth, where aesthetics are paramount. The procedure requires high precision and the dentist's experience, as it is important not only to restore the tooth but also to preserve the natural color and translucency of the enamel.
3. Crowns
A dental crown is a special cap that completely encases a damaged tooth, restoring its shape, strength, and appearance. This method is used when a tooth is severely damaged, weakened by root canal treatment, or extensively damaged.
Before a crown is placed, the tooth is prepared, followed by an impression or a digital scan. A custom-made crown is then fabricated to precisely replicate the tooth's anatomy. Crowns can be made of metal-ceramic, ceramic, or zirconia. Modern materials offer excellent aesthetics and durability. Ceramic and zirconia crowns are particularly popular because they closely resemble natural teeth.
4. Veneers
Veneers are primarily used to enhance the appearance of front teeth. They are thin shells that are bonded to the front surface of the tooth. They conceal chips, discoloration, unevenness, small gaps between teeth, and other aesthetic imperfections.
Dental veneers can significantly transform a smile while preserving the natural appearance of the teeth. They are often chosen by patients who want to improve the aesthetics of their smile without extensive treatment. Applying veneers requires tooth preparation and careful planning of the result.
5. Dental implants
When a tooth is completely lost, dental implants are considered one of the most modern methods of tooth replacement. A titanium implant is inserted into the jawbone and replaces the tooth root. After the healing phase, a crown is attached to it.
This method is considered a reliable and long-lasting solution. With proper care, implants can last for many years. Moreover, the implant helps maintain the load on the jawbone and prevents its gradual deterioration after tooth loss.
6. Bridges
A dental bridge is used when one or more adjacent teeth are missing. The bridge is attached to the neighboring teeth, which serve as supports. An artificial tooth is inserted between the missing teeth to close the gap.
Bridges help restore chewing function and the aesthetics of the smile. However, since the placement of a bridge often requires preparation of the adjacent teeth, implants can be a less invasive solution in some cases. Nevertheless, bridges remain a popular method of tooth restoration, especially when implants are not possible for various reasons.
