Losing weight without trying is a call for concern, and it is more common in women. It could be due to various factors such as stress, hormonal imbalance, thyroid disorders, or a serious medical condition. If you are reducing pounds rapidly and wondering what could be the reason, here we’ll explain some unexplained causes of weight loss in females that are mostly overlooked.

7 Causes Of Weight Loss In Females

There are many potential causes of weight loss in females including medical and non-medical, and it can be difficult to determine the underlying cause without comprehensive medical testing. However, some of the most common causes are;

1. Hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone. This can lead to a number of symptoms including weight loss, anxiety, and heart palpitations. In fact, weight loss is one of the most common symptoms of hyperthyroidism, especially in women.

The excess thyroid hormone speeds up the metabolism, which results in burning more calories. This can lead to rapid and significant weight loss, even after eating the same amount of food.

In addition, hyperthyroidism can also cause other symptoms such as anxiety, irritability, and difficulty sleeping, which can also contribute to weight loss.

While Hyperthyroidism can be an upsetting condition, treatment is available and most women are able to return to their normal weight once their thyroid hormone levels are back to normal.

2. Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease that primarily affects the joints. Women are at high risk for developing Rheumatoid arthritis. RA causes systemic inflammation which leads to a decrease in appetite, resulting in weight loss. Also, RA can cause fatigue and pain, making it difficult to exercise and maintain a healthy weight.

In addition, RA can also cause psychological distress, which can lead to anorexia nervosa, a condition characterized by self-imposed starvation. While anorexia nervosa is more common in females without RA, the condition does occur in some women with the disease.

Some RA medications, such as corticosteroids, can also cause gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, which further leads to weight loss.

While there is no cure for RA, early diagnosis and treatment is important in order to prevent joint damage and maintain a healthy weight.

3. Cancer

Cancer disease causes abnormal cells to divide unevenly, and it is a potential cause of weight loss in both sex. Cancer causes weight loss in females by damaging their digestive system, ability to absorb nutrients, and by reducing the amount of fat tissue in the body.

Additionally, cancer cells can release substances that alter metabolism and increase energy expenditure, leading to weight loss. Many cancers cause anorexia, a condition characterized by a loss of appetite.

On the other hand, cancer treatments such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy can all contribute to weight loss. Surgery can result in a decreased appetite or cause nausea and vomiting, while radiation and chemotherapy can both cause fatigue and lack of interest in food. As a result, females with cancer often lose weight even if they are eating the same amount of food as they were before their diagnosis.

4. Hormonal Imbalances

Hormonal imbalance is common cause of weight loss especially in elderly females. Women experience disruption in the levels of estrogen and leptin especially after 40, which leads to unintentional weight loss.

Estrogen helps to regulate metabolism and appetite, while leptin is responsible for regulating hunger and satiety signals. When the levels of these hormones are out of balance, it can lead to weight loss.

In addition, hormone imbalance can also cause changes in water retention and body's ability to store and use fat. This can lead to weight loss even when food intake remains constant.

5. Gastrointestinal Disorder (Crohn's or Ulcerative Colitis Diseases)

Gastrointestinal disorder happens due to inflammatory bowel and it leads to two main diseases: Crohn's and ulcerative Colitis.

The Crohn’s and ulcerative Colitis diseases affect the digestive track from mouth to anus, especially the small and large intestines. Both of these disorders can cause malabsorption of nutrients, severe abdominal pain, stomach cramps, and diarrhea – resulting in weight loss.

Another gastrointestinal disorder is celiac disease, which is caused by an intolerance to gluten. When someone with celiac disease eats gluten, their body mounts an immune response that damages the gut lining of the small intestine. This damage prevents the absorption of nutrients, leading to weight loss.

6. Psychological Factors

A number of psychological factors have been found to contribute to weight loss in females. Among these are stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, and body dissatisfaction.

The stress and anxiety can lead to eating disorder or restrictive dieting. Low self-esteem enforces poor body image that results in eating a few calories to try to look attractive. And, the body dissatisfaction can lead to extreme diets and excessive exercise in an attempt to achieve an idealized body type.

7. Poor Absorption Of Nutrients From Food

One of the many functions of the digestive system is to break down food so that nutrients can be absorbed into the bloodstream. Poor absorption of nutrients from food can lead to weight loss in females for several reasons.

• The body may not be getting the energy it needs to maintain its normal functions. This can lead to feelings of fatigue, making it difficult to participate in physical activity and resulting in weight loss.

• Poor nutrient absorption can lead to a decrease in muscle mass.

• It can also cause deficiencies in essential vitamins and minerals, which can lead to a variety of health problems that can eventually result in weight loss.

• Lack of nutrients absorption results in increased energy expenditure as the body tries to compensate for the lack of nutrients.

Unexplained Weight Loss In Teenage Girl

Unexplained weight loss in teenage girls can be caused by a variety of factors, ranging from stress to medical conditions. Some of the causes of weight loss are:

Eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa

  • Stress
  • Depression
  • Diabetes
  • Thyroid problems
  • Certain type of cancer

If a teen girl is losing weight without trying, it is important to speak with a doctor to rule out any potentially serious medical conditions.

Bottom Line

Weight loss is a common problem faced by many females, which can be caused by a variety of factors including physical, medical, and psychological. The potential causes of weight loss in females include hormonal imbalances, hyperthyroidism, gastrointestinal disorders, psychological factors, and poor absorption of nutrients from food.

While some causes of weight loss are mild and temporary, others can be more serious and require medical intervention. If you are experiencing unexplained weight loss, it is important to speak with your doctor to rule out any underlying health conditions.
