Going to the gym is a great way to stay in shape and improve your well-being. But what happens when you can’t stand the stifling indoors with all those sweaty people around you anymore, but you still want to take care of your fitness? You find the next best thing that you probably have never thought would be your everyday routine. Even though you might have never considered staying active outside the gym, here are several suggestions that'll be a great alternative for going to the gym.


If you hate the gym, you’ll love swimming. It’s a low-impact activity that’ll keep your heart rate up, build endurance, muscle strength, and cardiovascular fitness while helping you stay fit. Swimming also tones muscles and provides a full-body workout. It's a great workout for those who need to improve their coordination, balance, and posture, or for the people who need low-impact therapy after being injured. Not only is it good for your body, but for your mind as well, as swimming alleviates stress. So, gather a few of your friends, go to the local swimming pool or to the nearest beach, and you’ll work out and have fun at the same time.


Use the stairs.

Instead of going straight into the elevator, consider using the stairs at your office. If you live in the building, do the same regardless of climbing up or going down. This is great cardio and an amazing exercise for your legs. Toned muscles and a slimmer body will be just around the corner if you introduce running the stairs into your everyday routine. Burn an incredible 422 calories in a half hour, while you tone your legs and glutes by running the stairs at the park, a local stadium or even those that lead to your office. However, you need to keep in mind the proper technique, so you don’t risk getting hurt. To protect your knees and joints, push off from your toes rather than your heels while keeping your movements controlled to avoid falling. Pumping your arms will help propel you, making sure you maintain balance.

Ride a bike.

Whether you decide to ride a bike to work, or for a few hours during the day to blow off steam, it’ll be a wonderful way to stay in shape. Biking will allow you to clear your mind for the day ahead and unwind after a long day at work. Having in mind that you’ll burn 297 calories for every half hour you spend on your bike, it’s safe to say this can be the perfect alternative to hitting the gym. If you feel enthused about this sport, think about going a bit more extreme invest in a slopestyle bike so you can hit rougher trails and get extra stability. Working around the house is a great calorie burner. Therefore, think about cleaning your place at least once a week for an extra physical activity that'll compensate for you skipping the gym. You'll bend, stretch, push, pull, and combine resistance training with weightlifting, while also doing cardio as you walk up and down the stairs. A step stool can help you perform a mini step workout while you’re putting away the dishes in the cupboard. Mopping is a great opportunity to twist your upper body to the left and to the right to move the mop, instead of just using your arms for the entire work.

Put commercial breaks to good use.

Watching TV doesn't have to be all about slouching on the couch and snacking. You can actually put it to good use if you work out during commercial breaks. Instead of reaching for your phone, do a few stretching exercises. Walk to the kitchen to get some water, or use your Pilates ball to make the most of commercial breaks. Think about grabbing your Hula hoop and start hooping for a few minutes to burn those calories you took in by eating that greasy chips. If you like to dance, mute the TV, turn the volume up on your favorite music, and pump up the jam. If you don’t like the idea of working out 30 minutes a day, do jumping jacks during the commercials. If you end up watching TV for more than an hour, use another break to do 10 push-ups and 10 crunches, or maybe even jump rope.
