More and more people today are facing some of the modern age problems and ailments: syndromes of burnout, stress-related symptoms, and mental exhaustion are slowly but surely conquering the world; and unfortunately, almost no one is spared from this 21st-century plague.

That’s why we need to approach these problems rather seriously and try whatever works best to alleviate some of the symptoms connected with the mental (and physical) issues that we’ve just mentioned. We give you some simple yet effective tips and tricks on how to cope with physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion.

Shake Up Your Everyday Routine

One of the first things that you want to do when you feel mentally drained is to try to get out of the everyday rut that keeps exhausting you. You might not even realize how detrimental this can be for your overall health, but doing the same things repeatedly can truly leave a (bad) mark on your mental health. It’s true that we are the creatures of habit, but we also need to have a breakaway from this routine from time to time. Make sure to shake things up a bit and try to do stuff differently each day, even if it’s the same thing.

Change Bad Habits

When you actually decide to start doing things differently each day, good advice would be to change bad habits first. These are probably the hardest to alter, but the important thing is to stay determined, and not to back off in the moments of crisis that we all have from time to time. Try to minimize the intake of junk food, cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs—and you’re already on your way to feeling much better than you used to. These habits aren’t helping you in any way long term, but are actually further weakening your mind and body.

Get Physically Active

It’s extremely important to start a good habit and a routine in the form of a physical exercise. Many different things can help you alleviate the mental distress you’re facing, including activities like jogging, biking, running, swimming, or weight-lifting. And in case you’re kind of bored with these conventional activities, there’s another great way to fend off stress and mental exhaustion. For instance, more and more Australians today are practicing martial arts in Sydney. Not a lot of people know that martial arts are actually a great way to calm and relax your body through various breathing techniques and exercises, while simultaneously providing it the much-needed activity and motion.

Make Sure to Sleep Enough

Speaking of relaxation and being calm, you need to make sure that you’re getting your portion of a good seven to eight hours of sleep each day. You can’t possibly expect to feel all fresh and well-rested with irregular sleeping patterns and without getting enough good-quality sleep.

Meditate Regularly

Finding that much sought-out inner peace can be very challenging and hard for many people. That’s where things like yoga and meditation should jump in. You absolutely have to have that "me-time" during the day, where you can reflect upon things and figure out the ways to relax. Just remember not to ruminate on the current problems you might be facing because, that way, you’ll probably accomplish just the opposite: You’ll get even more upset and mentally drained.

Treat Yourself

A full day of pampering at the spa, or doing things that you enjoy the most, will surely benefit your mental state and improve it immensely. If you like movies, for example, find the time at least once a week to go to the cinema. Or, in case you like to party, go out with your colleagues or friends and have fun. Doing these small things for ourselves end up meaning a lot in the end.

Start a DIY Project or a Hobby

Another great way to spend your spare time is to start a DIY project or pick up a hobby. Learning new things will also get you out of the slump in no time—that’s why things like a language course or piano lessons can radically change your perception of things and relax you in a way you’ve probably never imagined.

The Bottom Line

In today’s day and age, many people around the globe are suffering from stress-related symptoms, burnout, and both mental and physical fatigue. A serious change needs to happen in this regard, which means that we have to make a U-turn from these problems as quickly as possible.

That’s why we gave you the seven things you must try when/if you feel mentally drained. These include shaking up your everyday routine, changing bad habits, getting more physically active, sleeping more/better, meditating regularly, treating yourself from time to time, and starting a DIY project or a hobby that’s going to help you in the process of feeling better overall.
