Health and caring for our immune system has always been important, but now more than ever with the coronavirus effecting every aspect of our lives, it has forced people to think more about how to take care of their immune system better. Even if you do not live a healthy life at the moment, like for example maybe you've been spending your extra time at home eating junk food, it is crucial to know that it is never too late to start living healthy now. There are many many ways we can boost our immune systems but I've put together a list of 5 simple ways you can start living healthy today.

1. Start a healthy and nutritious diet, and maintain it.

Eating a healthy diet does not mean making salads for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It means choosing mostly whole foods and eating other foods less often. Whole foods give our bodies the best nutrition we need and some examples include: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes.

2. Stay active through daily exercise

Not all of us are hardcore athletes but physical activity for at least 30 mins a day is important for everyone. Physical activity improves quality of life, overall health, reduces disease risk, and even improves our moods! Choose physical activities that support your regular lifestyle to make staying active a positive experience that is easily maintainable. Even a walk around your neighborhood will be beneficial. You set your pace and if you need some company to make it more fun, invite a family member or friend with you!

3. Get a good night's sleep

Sleep can easily be the sacrifice we make if we need to study, have extra work to do, or simply want to stay up late and watch a tv show. However, sleep is the groundwork for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Not getting enough sleep actually weakens the immune system making us more at risk for catching a virus and long-term lack of sleep can cause major health problems. Create a sustainable sleep routine where you get at least 7 hours of sleep.

4. As much as possible, avoid smoking and alcohol

Smoking a drinking comprises the balance to our immune systems. Habitual smoking causes permanent damage to the respiratory system and heavy drinking may cause a load of health problems. By smoking and drinking alcohol, we put all of our organs at risk. A healthy amount of drinking alcohol is occasional with no more than 2 drinks. Of course the very best and most healthy liquid to be drinking all throughout the day is water. Try adding lemon, lime or other fruits to a glass of water to make it flavorful and more interesting.

5. Go outside and enjoy some sunlight!

The sun's rays help our bodies make vitamin D which we need for healthy bones, and a healthy immune system. Get out at least once and day to enjoy some warm sunshine but be careful and use sunscreen when spending over 15 minutes in the sun. Sunshine also helps improve mood and even quality of sleep.
