Everyone wants to be a productive member of society. Sometimes, however, in the rush to be all you can be, you can get lost in a sea of external expectations and to-do lists. You may feel like you are falling behind and are afraid you'll never catch up to the business owners in your field who are rising to the top. Taking good care of yourself is the key to being able to take control of your life. Here are five things you can do to gain confidence and calm your fears.

Take Care of Your Health

The first step in learning how to boost your self confidence and mental health is making sure you start with a firm foundation. Mental and physical health are inherently linked. Researchers find that those suffering from problems such as depression and anxiety often neglect their physical needs when they are overwhelmed with mental anguish which in turn can actually compound it.

Comfort foods feel good in the moment, but they can exacerbate feelings of low self worth. Putting together a meal plan can help you stay on track with nutrition. It's also important to stay active. Just taking frequent walks around your neighborhood can keep both your body and your mind alert.

Improve Your Skills

In the ideal world, the entrepreneur who has the best business plan and offers the highest quality products or services would be the most successful. In the real world, however, this isn't always the case. The business owners who seem to rise above the rest are the ones that not only offer great things but also know how to market themselves.

The good news is that you don't have to do this alone. You can hire a mentor or business expert to help you formulate a game plan. Consultants can give you the confidence boost you need to show the world exactly what you have to offer.

Choose Friends Wisely

You have probably heard the old adage that you should keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Surrounding yourself with people who don't support you, however, is not great for your mental health. Take an honest look at the people you see most often throughout the day. Do they encourage you? Do they believe in you? If the answer to both of these questions is no, you may need to find new friends.

It's important to surround yourself with people who challenge and inspire you, too. Staying in your comfort zone where everyone tells you how great you are may be good for your ego, but it doesn't serve you well in the long run. Those closest to you should be the ones who know how to balance support and growth.

Find Ways To Relax

Work is important, but so is rest. Discover what relaxes you, and make time for it in your schedule. Physical activity is one way to approach relaxation. For example, running releases endorphins, and a daily yoga practice can help you destress.

Meditation may also help ease the stress of your day and help you refocus on the things that matter. Start with just five minutes every evening to clear your mind and focus on your breathing. Not only can you feel the tension slip away but it can also help you get a better night's sleep so that you are refreshed in the morning.

Keep a Journal

Writing down your thoughts is a good way to identify anything that is holding you back. Many things go through your head throughout the day that you may not even consciously realize. Spend a few minutes a day jotting down whatever you're thinking.

Gratitude is beneficial to your mental health. Make a list of things you are grateful for every day. Focusing on the positive things in your life, even when times are hard, can boost your mood and your confidence. Doing well involves more than just crossing everything off your daily task list. Following these five tips can give you the mental jolt you need to be more confident and productive.
