For many people who choose to get a nose job, the decision-making process is rooted in cosmetic benefits. Perhaps they have never been comfortable with the size, shape, and look of their nose and this is a way of making some small changes that give them the confidence they desire. For others, however, a nose job isn’t so much an option, rather it is a necessity. That’s right, there are plenty of people who require a nose job for medical reasons. Let’s take a look at four common medical reasons that may prompt a person to go ahead and get a nose job.

Ongoing Sinus Issues

One medical reason it may be necessary to proceed with a nose job is chronic sinus problems. If a person suffers from nasal allergies and sinus congestion on a regular basis, then a nose job could indeed help. In some cases, it may be due to a deviated nasal septum, which a nose job can address and fix. If you have chronic sinus issues, it’s important to discuss this with the doctor before proceeding, so you make sure you are prepared for the surgery, the after-care, and what you can expect results-wise.

Keep in mind that sinus-related problems might be covered by your health insurance. It is worth investigating since this would help you to save some money. However, keep in mind that in many cases you are restricted to work with specific doctors. Check your policy and see if you can get a nose job done for medical reasons at the desired cosmetic surgeon. If not, the insurance company might not give you a reimbursement.

Birth Defect - Cleft Lip or Cleft Palate

For the person who has a birth defect in the form of a cleft lip or palate, a nose job can be the solution they are after. This birth defect isn't so much a cosmetic issue - for many, it's a health issue. A cleft lip or palate can impede a person's ability to eat and drink properly, so getting it fixed is of the utmost importance. Outside of a birth defect, the person may have a deformity which, again, impedes their ability to go about their daily tasks in a comfortable manner.

In the event that the birth defect you suffer from does not have clear physical health effects, remember that they might still have a negative impact on your mental health. For most of us, appearance is really important. And people tend to be mean with those that have birth defects. This practically means that you might want to get a nose job anyway just to not have to deal with the mental hardship that might appear.

A Severe Burn to the Nose

This one is obviously not as common, but again is a medical issue. If someone has suffered severe burns that include their nose, and the burn now impedes the use of their nose thanks to their nostrils closing - a nose job can certainly address this issue. Getting function back of their nose is obviously a huge thing.

Fixing an Injury

A broken nose or other type of severe injury can leave the nose in a very uncomfortable state. Not everyone heals the same, and the nose may not heal properly. A nose job can address this and fix the problem, thereby erasing any damage caused by the initial injury.

Are You a Good Candidate?

Even if you fit into one of these categories and you think you may have a medical reason for a nose job, it's still important to ensure you're an ideal candidate for the surgery. In general, you need to be physically healthy and preferably a non-smoker. You also need to have realistic expectations and to get the okay from your doctor.

As you can see, there are a number of medical reasons that may prompt a person to go ahead with a nose job, outside of cosmetic motivations.
