Yoga is continuously growing popular among people throughout the world for its benefits that it provides for the body and the mind. More and more people are adding Yoga practice which includes a variety of Yogic Asanas (or Postures) and Pranyama (breathing exercises) in their daily routines. As a result, more and more people are joining yoga classes to achieve their physical, mental and spiritual goals.

Their gurus that help them to achieve these goals are often their yoga teachers or instructors. These yoga teachers are required to not teach their students the various asanas and pranayamas but to also guide them spiritually and guide them to understand the real essence of YOGA.

Hence the role of these yoga teachers is an important one and it is certain that the person who is going to play this role should be well qualified and trained to do the job. Becoming a yoga teacher certainly brings responsibilities of many sorts.

Firstly the Yoga teacher himself/herself should have gained a high level of competence and experience in performing the yogic asanas and breathing exercises.

Secondly, to be able to guide their students to grow physically, emotionally and mentally, the teachers should know the art of teaching itself. Apart from these two basic factors, another important factor that is taught to the ones training to become yoga teachers is the basic knowledge of anatomy.

At some training centers, particularly those ones that teach their trainees as the traditional ways which are similar to derived from the ancient and original forms of yoga practices also teach their trainees about nadis through which the prana energy flows through the body and also about the chakras. However the modern approach to Yoga teacher training is different than the original ancient ways. It is optimized according to a modern approach to yoga.

The most widely used training course in yoga is one known as 200-hour yoga teacher training. After completing this course one can get certification of RYT-200 which is given by Yoga alliance international. This course is considered the standard around the world and many yoga teachers training retreats in Bali also train the practitioners through this course and this course provides the trainees a chance of expanding their knowledge in different aspects of yoga which are asanas, pranayama, kriyas, meditation, bandha, anatomy and yogic philosophy.

Since teaching yoga packs a whole lot of responsibilities since teaching concerns the health and well being of those learning yoga. It becomes necessary that the teaching methods and course is thorough and effective in producing competent teachers. These yoga teacher trainees are trained to master all the asanas, down to each little detail about those asanas and their alignment. Anatomy forms another important component of the teacher training courses in Bali.

This is important so as to teach the trainees about important body parts and how they work and how asanas affect them. Along with this they are taught about different pranayams such as anulom-vilom, kapal-bhati surya-bedan, etc. gaining knowledge about different mantras and chants and guiding through meditations comprises another important aspect of yoga teacher training in Bali. Apart from these aspects there is another limb of yoga teacher training, a quintessential one which is learning about Yogic philosophy.

This is usually done by giving trainees the philosophical knowledge from ancient Indian texts such as ‘The Patnjali’s Yoga sutras’. Learning and understanding the yoga philosophy themselves enables the yoga teachers to easily impart the knowledge and essence of yoga to their students, something that is ultimately going to help them become better.
