Do you empower yourself to improve when life isn't working out for you? People often work themselves up into a state that is anything but empowering. Turning things around requires all of our resources when things get challenging.

We can all overcome our negative thinking and emotions. And we can all bring about positive change in our lives.

Try these tips for taking back control of your life:

Take an assertive stance.

Our passive nature makes it difficult for us to make significant progress. Sometimes you have to say what you want. There are times when it is necessary to say 'no' to others. There's no harm in making a decision and following through on it, even if you're not selfish.

Being assertive can help a few different ways:

  • It helps make you more self confident.
  • It helps empower you.
  • You can understand and recognize your feelings.
  • You'll get respect from others.
  • It improves communication.
  • It creates win-win situations.
  • It helps you make better decisions.
  • It creates honest relationships.

- You'll have more job satisfaction.

Learning to be assertive can also help you effectively voice your opinions when talk ing to others about issues.

List your ten greatest strengths.

Consider how you can take advantage of them. You'll probably need your strengths to regain control over your life.

Consider your ten greatest weaknesses as well.

We often get into trouble because of these things. How can you mitigate your weaknesses?

Don't make excuses.

You are unable to control the situation because of them. You can change it if you take responsibility. Excuses let you justify passive behavior. When you believe something is beyond your control, you also think it is unchangeable.

Sleep more.

Sleep is essential for being at your best, but most people need more. Increasing sleep by one hour per night improves energy, clarity of thought, and mood. Get a good night's sleep by switching off the TV and going to bed earlier. Also, make sure your bedroom is dark, quiet, relaxing, and at a comfortable temperature. Remove electronic devices such as TVs, computers and smart phones from the bedroom. Avoid heavy meals, caffeine and alcohol before bed, and consider getting some exercise during the day to sleep better at night.

Prioritize what's most important.

Each morning, devote the first hour or two to the most important tasks. You will be focused and energetic at this time.

Identify the area of your life where improvement would be most beneficial.

Put your efforts into one area where you can have the greatest impact. A million dollars won't make a huge difference if you already make $1 million per year.

Expectations don't matter.

We seem to be told what to do by the whole world. In the absence of all those expectations, what would you do? Make a change for yourself.

Find out why you're not moving forward.

Why aren’t you already living on your own terms? What's stopping you? What are your fears? How can you overcome these challenges? Make a plan to overcome this resistance.

Adapt as necessary.

You now know what to do after following all the above steps. Now is the time to take action. Get started.

The feeling of having complete control over your life is one of the most fulfilling. You'll feel like there's nothing you can't do. As you take charge of your life, the world sits patiently waiting for you. Take the first step today. The small steps we take every day quickly add up to quite a bit.
