10 Effective Tips on How to Visually Increase the Bathroom

1. Remove excess

This may appear to be a straightforward solution, but do you really require additional towel holders or a wall shelf? It is worthwhile to remove at least one shelf or an extra towel holder, and the space will appear larger.

In addition, look for any excess objects that you do not use or use infrequently; is there any clutter on the remaining storage surfaces? The jumble of goods gives the image of congestion and heightens the sense of a confined space. Use space wisely: bottles of household chemicals can be stored under the bathroom sink.

2. Choose a bath screen in a common color scheme

A bathtub screen can be a bright spot and an accent in a bathroom, but if it's small, it will draw too much attention. Optimally - choose a curtain in a calm range to match the tiles on the walls. If you don't mind glass shower doors, even better. Choose frameless, so they are almost invisible.

3. Add mirrors

Mirrors visually increase the space in any room, and in a small bathroom it’s a sin not to use this effect. You should not be limited to a small mirror above the sink. Hang a mirror up to the ceiling, or opt for cabinets with a mirrored surface (you'll have both organized storage and extra space for self-admiration).

If your bathroom has a window, put a mirror in front of it, this will help create the illusion that the walls are not so close to each other. Thus, you expand the room. There is only one minus: mirrors need constant care. In the bathroom, they will definitely not be able to escape from accidental splashes, so you will have to wipe the mirrors more often than in other rooms.

4. Add light

It's more of a psychological trick, but being able to see all angles clearly will give the impression of more space than it really is. The dream of most is to have a spacious bathroom with a window through which natural daylight will pour in. Alas, such luxury is available most often only in private country houses.

In apartments, we rely on competent artificial lighting. To make the bathroom seem larger, the light should evenly flood the entire space, and not shine exclusively on the mirror or from above. The principle that lighting needs to be done at different levels also works here: ceiling lights need to be combined with sconces, then a room flooded with light will seem more spacious.

5. Raise the ceiling

Low ceilings in tiny rooms give the impression of a basement. There is no need to think about how to visually enlarge the bathroom due to ceiling coverings. There are not many options here: you can play on the design of the ceiling or on the lighting. If there is an opportunity and this option does not disgust the tastes of the owners of the house, it is worth making a mirrored ceiling. It will visually increase the space of the room almost twice.

Another spectacular option would be a sky design. By the way, modern materials make it possible to make a gentle blue sky, and when darkness falls or the electric light is turned on, turn it into a starry canvas. This will help spotlights that do not take up much space and give a pleasant, diffused light.

6. Use compact pieces of furniture and decor

Everything requires balance, and if the room is tiny, the items in it should be suitable. If your bathroom feels crowded because the sink is too large or the cabinet takes up more space than it should, consider getting a smaller one. Use space wisely. The same is true for any other bathroom products. Although this is not the cheapest option, the smaller elements will provide a greater sensation of space and flexibility of movement.

7. Ditch the floor plumbing

It is also convenient in terms of future cleaning in the bathroom. A wall-hung compact toilet will not look as bulky as a floor model, even if you have to build a box for installation. Then a storage system or a water heater can be placed above this box. The same applies to the sinks - it is better to leave models on a pedestal for another occasion, and choose sinks built into the cabinet or turn to hanging models. When choosing a hanging sink, you should definitely consider which siphon you choose - a plastic cheap one will no longer work.

8. Use transparent objects

If you need some ornamental components or furnishings in the bathroom, choose transparent items. For example, shower curtains and shelves can both be transparent. The choice of transparent materials will provide the bathroom with lightness and airiness, as is typical of glass. It is not required in this situation to use glass as a material for things; acrylic or plexiglass can be used instead.

9. Color matters

Light walls and floors are almost an axiom for small bathrooms. Pay attention to the Scandinavian apartments: the Swedes exploit the color of snow with unprecedented zeal, diluting it with bright accents in the form of colored towels, bath curtains, and posters on the door.

A well-known fact: dark walls cause an oppressive feeling even in spacious areas, to say nothing of small rooms. In addition to what has been said: on a dark tile, drops of water are especially visible, which harden and leave streaks. The optimal color solution for the bathroom: a light base (white, beige, pastel) and contrasting accents, perhaps one accent wall or colored cabinets.

10. Freshen up the paint

Use one color for surfaces. It doesn't matter if you use light colors, which also help to visually expand the bathroom or a dramatic dark color. But the walls, ceiling, and even some furniture elements should create a feeling of a single space. The fewer objects that will "intrude" into this area, the better.
