Introduction: The Spiritual Resurgence

1. The contemporary significance of spirituality is emphasized by its role in meeting the unaddressed needs of individuals in the 21st century (Tacey, 2003). This is particularly evident in the rise of a more personalized religious experience. The diversity of views on spirituality highlights its contemporary relevance (Ramezani, 2016) both in religious and secular spheres. The culture of contemporary spirituality is seen as a potential force for sustainable development, although it also poses specific risks (Witt, 2011). Additionally, the emergence of a new generation of progressive religious thinkers further underlines the contemporary significance of spirituality (Lynch, 2007).

Digital Spirituality: Embracing Tech

2. The digital era has significantly impacted the spread of spiritual teachings as technology is playing a crucial role in this process. Sahu (2019) and Leal (2019) both highlight the importance of ICT and digital platforms in the dissemination of religious and spiritual beliefs. The use of social media and other digital tools has also been found to influence the spirituality and mission of digital natives (Hedt, 2013). Furthermore, the internet has become a platform for the practice of digital religion. It includes the rise of digital deities and techno-shamanism (Munir, 2023), which describes the transformative role of technology in shaping the landscape of spirituality in the digital age.

Science Meets Spirituality

3. A growing body of research supports the positive impact of spiritual practices on mental and physical health. Idler (2008) and Larson (2003) both highlight the potential benefits of religious and spiritual involvement. It includes increased longevity, coping resources, and improved health outcomes. Lucchetti (2021) further highlights the bidirectional relationship between spirituality and mental health. Religious beliefs play a role in coping with distress. Yuen (2007) emphasizes the role of spirituality in patient care, particularly at the end of life, and its influence on medical decision-making. These studies collectively suggest that spiritual practices can enhance overall well-being, providing psychological and physical benefits.

Daily Spirituality: Practical Tips

4. The integration of spirituality especially mindfulness and gratitude into daily life can be achieved through various practices. Tart (1990) suggests that the use of mindfulness cultivation traditions like Gurdjieff training can increase mindfulness in everyday situations. Walsh (1999) outlines seven central practices to help individuals integrate spirituality into their daily lives. These practices include cultivating emotional wisdom, living ethically, and expressing spirit in action. Cashwell (2005) provides a guide for counsellors to integrate spiritual and religious issues into their practice, including the use of mindfulness and ritual. Cooper (2022) highlights the importance of addressing spiritual needs in primary care settings and proposes the use of mindfulness as a potential intervention. These studies collectively emphasize the importance of mindfulness and gratitude in integrating spirituality into daily life.

Spirituality and Social Impact

5. Spirituality plays a crucial role in promoting social justice and empathy, fostering unity and compassion. Hodge (2012) and Mthethwa-Sommers (2014) both highlight the link between spirituality and social justice. Spirituality discusses its operationalization across diverse faith traditions and social justice emphasizes its role in providing courage and conviction in the face of challenges. Nash (2006) further underscores spirituality's transformative and healing capacity, particularly in reducing separation and alienation. Fox (1979) extends this discussion by proposing a spirituality of compassion that unites mystical awareness with social justice, emphasizing the interconnectedness of all things. These studies collectively demonstrate the potential of spirituality to enhance empathy, promote social justice, and foster unity and compassion.

Conclusion

10. In a nutshell, practising spirituality in our daily lives can amicably address many contemporary issues. To lead a balanced life, spirituality should be given a due share in our lives.
