Personal goals are more than something you plan to do at the beginning of every year. There isn’t a specific time you're allowed to set them either. Goals are necessary for navigating our way through life. Without them, it can be easy to fall into “the abyss”.

The Abyss is just a state of mind where your life is on autopilot. No clear direction or destination.

There are some who might be able to coast through life being blown by the wind, in a way. However, the majority of the earth's population needs some form of structure and direction to where they want or need to go.

You clicked on this article because you're looking for a change in your life. Which is good! You’re moving in the right direction.

Now all you need is the “how?”, right?

Below are 6 tips I’ve researched that have helped me set personal goals myself. Tips I know if you implement them yourself, you’ll be miles closer to the life you want.

Tip #1 - Write down your goal

The first step is simply to get started.

A key tool in visualizing your goals is to write them down.

A study done at the University of Tokyo revealed that writing on physical paper can lead to stronger brain activity. Researchers say that the unique, complex, spatial, and tactile information associated with writing by hand on physical paper is likely what leads to improved memory.

How are we applying this to our tips though?

By physically writing down our goals, on paper and not on a tablet or phone, we should be more cognizant of what it we are writing. Bridging the gap between our brain and our hands.

If we let our imagination free, there is virtually no limit to what we can come up with.

Tip #2 - Set a deadline

We have different deadlines in our everyday life. When you get up to go to work, you haven’t a set time to be there.

Knowing that you make the necessary preparations to stay on time. Otherwise, you’d be out of a job.

A deadline keeps us accountable

After writing down your goal/s, set a reasonable timeframe on which you want to complete them. You’ll get a better understanding of exactly what you need to do to get it done.

Tip #3 - Develop your skillset

Your new goals may require you to develop some type of skill.

Figuring out what extra knowledge you may need is essential if you want to be successful.

Depending on what you want to achieve, there are many avenues you can take to acquire to skill or knowledge you need. All it takes is a little searching.

Tip #4 - Take the leap

Procrastination is a disease that has plagued many individuals' personal lives. It often occurs when the “planning” phase of a task is done and the “action” phase has to begin.

You may want to wait for the perfect moment to start. When everything is aligned and you feel it's the right time.

However, the truth is that there isn’t a right time, nor is there a wrong time. The only time is now.

Simply starting will make everything that comes after a little bit more easy to handle.

*******

When you look back on the steps you took to get to where you want to be, you’ll wonder why it ever took you so long. Never give up on your quest for a better life. You deserve it. As I said in the beginning, just by you clicking on this article, you’re already heading in the right direction. So get out there and make the impossible a reality.
