Why Your Leadership Tactics Are Failing You

Understanding How These 4 Problems Make Tactics Useless

Have you been trying to be successful as a leader...

Reading all the books...

Listening to all the podcasts...

Going to all the conferences...

And still discovering that no matter what tactics you learn...

You're still failing?

This is the norm for most leaders...

Especially when leadership development completely fails 80% of the time.

But...

It is not a mystery as to why this happens.

There are four problems that leaders regularly encounter...

Which is causing the tactics they learn to be useless.

What are they?

The first are psychophysiological problems.

Tactics are useless when our psychophysiology is a problem.

And in today's workforce...

That is the norm.

Over 80% of the workforce is in burnout...

Which is one of the worst psychophysiological states to be in from a business perspective...

Without accounting for other problems like chronic disease and conditions that negatively impact our ability to function...

And other common psychophysiological problems in today's world.

You could literally learn all of the best tactics in leadership...

And they would be inaccessible due to problems occurring in your psychophysiology.

I sometimes talk about VQ (Vitality Quotient) in my work, which has a "direct" impact on IQ (Intelligence Quotient, aka Cognitive Intelligence) and EQ/EI (Emotional Intelligence).

When VQ is low...

So are both IQ and EQ.

When you increase VQ...

You can increase both IQ and EQ without changing anything else.

Yes...

There is even research that has shown IQ increases where people enter higher standard deviations or classifications of IQ.

(Despite the outdated myth based on the unethical beliefs of genetic determinism that claims IQ is stagnant and cannot change. The science and research have shown that this is dramatically false.)

But this doesn't take into account other psychophysiological factors...

Such as Memory Capsules in the Nervous System...

Neurocardiological factors...

Even problems with the Gut-Brain Axis...

Which can override our capacities to utilize the leadership tactics we know.

The second problem is actually understanding clients/customers and employees.

Look...

You can use the best tactics that exist...

But if you do not understand the true reality...

As well as the perceived reality...

Of your employees and clients/customers...

You'll fail as a leader.

I have watched so many leaders launch new initiatives, products and services, and create cultural changes...

That have all failed miserably...

Because they failed to actually understand the clients/customers and employees they were supposed to be serving.

Tactics are not a replacement for understanding...

Not theoretical understanding...

But deep and intimate knowledge of the real human beings in front of you.

Most leaders today are attempting to lead from their ivory towers...

But those towers are collapsing because employees and clients/customers know that the leaders do not actually know, understand, or care about them in the slightest.

The result...

Is that, eventually, the ivory tower collapses...

Crushing the leader inside.

The third problem is the business category.

In business...

Based on the economic data...

In any category, there is one Category King/Queen Company...

That owns, on average, 76% of the total market.

Everyone else fights for the remainder of the market.

Here's what most leaders fail to grasp...

This usually does not change.

The Category King/Queen usually stays at the top...

No matter what tactics they use...

And no matter what tactics the other companies use in the category.

Once the market has determined the Category King/Queen...

It stays like that.

There are only a few ways around this problem...

You either...

Have to create a niche market - a smaller overall subcategory that you can address significantly better...

Create a new market that makes the old market irrelevant (Like Netflix and Blockbuster)...

Or the Category King/Queen has to willingly give up their position in the market (Such as if the company decides a new market is more enticing to pursue... Even if they end up being wrong).

If one of these three conditions is not met...

Then the market share remains relatively unchanged...

No matter what tactics you use.

You can try to play the "better" game...

But you end up comparing yourself to the Category King/Queen, cementing them further as the Category King/Queen in others' minds...

And if the "better" is not significant enough to define a new niche market...

Then nothing really changes.

Tactics do not change a category.

The fourth problem is the business ecosystem.

Here is the reality that more and more businesses are facing today...

The ecosystem that they are in is deteriorating.

Their personal ecosystem is becoming worse...

Their suppliers' ecosystems are becoming worse...

Their customers'/clients' ecosystems are becoming worse...

And the overall business ecosystem is collapsing.

Think of it like a rainforest...

But in the entire landscape, there is no more rainfall.

What happens?

The trees start to die...

The soil becomes dry...

Food becomes scarce...

Animals flee because they cannot live in that environment anymore...

And eventually the rainforest dies.

If the rains stop...

The ecosystem dies.

Many businesses are discovering that the rains have stopped in their ecosystems...

And instead of trying to figure out how to make it rain again...

They are attempting to steal and hoard what little resources their ecosystem still has...

But what they will discover...

Is that they will eat through those resources...

And nothing will be left at the end of it.

They will collapse and crumble in the dust of what used to be a rainforest.

Leadership tactics do not change the health of the ecosystem...

Often you need a different business model entirely that puts the health of the ecosystem first.

I call this Regenerative Legacy Design in my work.

What most leaders fail to understand here...

Is that when you tend to the ecosystem...

Support it...

Make it healthier...

It actually has the capacity to provide "more" than what they can currently obtain.

But most leaders are in such panicked states, fighting for what little resources are left...

Destroying their ecosystems further in the process...

That they lose the vastly greater opportunities that could occur if they went about intentionally healing their ecosystems.

These are the four problems that leaders are encountering in today's world...

And it is why their tactics continually fail them.

If you want to have success as a leader...

You need to stop believing that the solution is a new or different tactic.

The real solution lies in one or more of these other problems...

And if you resolve the problems...

You end up discovering that the tactics can work...

But only when these other problems are figured out first.

Understand which problem(s) you face...

Find a solution to them...

Then use and gain access to the tactics that allow you to flourish as a leader.
