You Miss Who You Used to Be

Not because life was better, but because you felt more like yourself

By mikePublished 4 months ago • 2 min read

Sometimes, it’s not a person you miss.

It’s yourself.

An older version of you that felt different. Lighter. More real in a way you can’t fully explain. You think back to certain moments in your life—not necessarily because everything was perfect, but because you felt more connected to who you were.

There was a sense of clarity back then.

You didn’t question everything as much. You didn’t overthink every decision. You just moved, experienced things, reacted naturally. Life felt more direct, less complicated. And even when things weren’t easy, they didn’t feel as heavy as they do now.

That’s what you miss.

Not the situation, but the feeling.

Because somewhere along the way, things changed.

Slowly, without you really noticing it at first.

You became more aware, but also more hesitant. More thoughtful, but also more doubtful. You started carrying more responsibilities, more expectations, more pressure—both from the outside and from yourself.

And that shifted something.

You stopped acting as freely as you used to. You started thinking more before doing anything. You became more careful, more controlled, more guarded. And while that helped you grow in some ways, it also created distance between you and that earlier version of yourself.

Now, everything feels a bit more filtered.

Less natural.

Less spontaneous.

And in quiet moments, you feel it.

That small disconnect.

Like you’re still you, but not fully.

That’s when the nostalgia hits.

You start remembering who you used to be and wondering what changed. You question whether you lost something along the way, or if this is just what growing up feels like. And that question doesn’t always have a simple answer.

Because it’s not just one thing.

It’s a combination of experiences, decisions, and time.

You’ve seen more, learned more, gone through more. And all of that shapes you. It changes how you think, how you react, how you move through life. You can’t go back to being that exact version of yourself, because you’re not in the same place anymore.

But that doesn’t mean that version of you is gone.

It just means it’s buried under everything you’ve added on top.

The pressure.

The expectations.

The overthinking.

The constant need to get things right.

And sometimes, what you really need isn’t to go back…

It’s to reconnect.

To bring parts of that version of yourself into who you are now.

Maybe it’s the way you used to enjoy simple things without overanalyzing them. Maybe it’s the way you expressed yourself without worrying about how it would be perceived. Maybe it’s the confidence you had before you started doubting yourself.

Those things are still there.

You’ve just moved away from them.

And the good news is, you can move back.

Not by trying to become your old self again, but by letting go of some of what’s been weighing you down. By allowing yourself to be a little less controlled, a little less filtered, a little more real.

Because growth isn’t about losing who you were.

It’s about evolving without forgetting yourself in the process.

So if you’ve been feeling like you miss who you used to be, don’t ignore that feeling.

Don’t just brush it off as nostalgia.

Pay attention to it.

Because it’s showing you something important.

It’s reminding you of parts of yourself that mattered.

Parts that you might need to bring back.

Not to live in the past…

But to feel more like yourself again in the present.
