The Things I Saw

We often went for walks, but this time we found a new wood; well, I say wood, it was really a forest. It was a summer day with the sun shining brightly, but when we took the path into the forest, we entered a world of green twilight.

The forest was beautiful and we saw some beautiful sights then we saw the lights and came to a magical glade. In that place lay the fairy queen on a beautiful bed of flowers while other fairies danced around, worshipping and praising her, as she slept, dreaming of far away lands.

Was she Titania, and where was her Oberon or Miranda? It really made us think of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by Bill Shakespeare, except this was real and we were seeing this.

We did not speak to them for fear of scaring them away or falling under some fair spell. although I dared to take a few pictures with my phone (no flash of course). We all said that we would have something to talk about when we got back, although no one would believe us, but I had the pictures on my phone.

Wandering back we couldn't stop talking about what we had seen, until we got back to our estate.

Me: "I can't believe that we have seen fairies in the forest, what do you all think?"

Them: "What are you going on about?"

Me: "The fairies in the forest, we all were enchanted by them"

Them: "Are you puddled? There was nothing in the forest apart from dead leaves and branches and the odd rabbit and squirrel. Di dyou think that they were fairies?"

Me: "No, we saw the fairy queen sleeping and her retinue dancing around and looking out for her"

Them: "Have to been smoking some wacky baccy, or did you have some magic mushrooms? There was nothing out of the ordinary in that forest"

Me: "Look, I took these pictures"

I took out my phone and went to the pictures folder. There were pictures, but they showed nothing but the forest glade. The phone had captured the greenery but not the fairies, maybe they could not be photographed. I stared to worry.

I knew what I had seen, what we all had seen, but now my friends, and my trusty phone were both denying it. I asked if we should go back but they just said "Why?"

I could go back on my own, but what would that prove if I could not take a picture? Can you actually capture a fairy on film or phone? Apparently not.

If I kept going on about what I had seen I know my friends would eventually stop speaking to me, but I am sure that I saw what I saw, in fact that we saw what we saw. So why were they denying it?

I am the one who always demand evidence, and in this case I had none, just the memory of what I know we all saw with our own two eyes. But they deny seeing anything, and there are more of them that me, so what they say carries the weight.

I will just have to stay quiet about it, but that scene is burned in my memory now, and I will never forget it, but I know I can never tell anyone, except if I treat it as a tale that I made up. In fact I could actually truthfully say it was a fairy story, and no doubt all my friends would agree, because according to them we all saw nothing, but I know we saw the fairy queen.
