The Plumbers and the Thieves: A Dark Comedy of Errors

The True Story of How Two Hapless Criminals Became Part of History's Most Infamous Scandal

By vishawajeet SabalePublished about a year ago 3 min read

It was the summer of 1972, and two hapless thieves, John and Anthony, had just made the biggest mistake of their lives. They had broken into the Watergate complex in Washington D.C, looking for some dirt on the Democratic Party.

Their plan was simple. They would sneak into the building, search for some documents, and be out before anyone noticed. But as soon as they got in, things started to go wrong.

First, they found out that the document room was locked, and they didn't have the key. Then, they accidentally triggered an alarm, and security guards were on their way.

Panicking, John and Anthony ran through the building, looking for a way out. They found a door marked "Stairway", and ran down the stairs, hoping to find an exit.

But as they reached the basement, they heard a strange noise. It sounded like someone was drilling into the wall. Curious, they followed the sound and found a locked door.

Anthony pulled out his trusty lock-picking kit and got to work. After a few minutes, the lock clicked, and the door swung open.

Inside the room, they found a group of men huddled around a table, with tools and wires spread out before them. The men looked up in surprise, and John and Anthony froze in shock.

"Who the hell are you guys?" one of the men demanded.

John and Anthony didn't know what to say. They were caught red-handed, in a room full of strangers, with no way out.

One of the men stood up and walked towards them. "Well, you've got two choices," he said. "We either kill you, or you help us with our little project."

John and Anthony didn't want to die, so they chose the latter. The men explained that they were part of a secret group called the Plumbers, and they were trying to fix a problem with the pipes.

John and Anthony were given tools and told to get to work. They had no idea what they were doing, but they didn't have much of a choice.

As they worked, they listened to the Plumbers' conversation. They talked about wiretapping phones and bugging rooms, and John and Anthony started to realize that they had stumbled upon something much bigger than they had anticipated.

But the longer they worked with the Plumbers, the more ridiculous the situation became. They found out that one of the men was a former CIA agent, and another was a Cuban ex-pat with a thick accent.

The men joked and laughed as they worked, and John and Anthony started to relax. They even shared a few beers with the Plumbers, and started to feel like they were part of the team.

But all good things must come to an end. As they finished up their work, they heard a knock on the door. It was security, and they had finally caught up with John and Anthony.

The Plumbers quickly hid the tools and wires, and the group tried to act casual as security burst into the room. But it was too late. John and Anthony were caught, and so were the Plumbers.

As the story of the Watergate break-in unfolded, John and Anthony watched from their jail cell, amazed at the comedy of errors that had led them there. They laughed at the absurdity of the situation, and couldn't believe they had gotten caught up in something so big.

In the end, John and Anthony became part of history, their names forever linked to the infamous Watergate scandal. But for them, it would always be a dark comedy, a cautionary tale of what can happen when you let your curiosity get the best of you.
