Smoothing the Transition: Creating an Employee Onboarding Checklist for new employees

Are you sitting around with nothing to do on your first day at work? If that happened to you, then that company needs a better Employee Onboarding checklist. Employee onboarding is the process of introducing new employees to the culture, policies, procedures, and expectations of the company. The purpose of employee onboarding is to ensure that new employees have the knowledge, skills, and support they need to be successful in their role. It provides them with an understanding of their role, their responsibilities, and their expectations of the company. It also helps to ensure that the organization’s goals and objectives are met.

In the early 1900s, the concept of employee onboarding was born. As businesses grew, so did the need for streamlined onboarding processes. Companies began to develop and refine their onboarding processes to make sure that new hires had the knowledge and tools they needed to hit the ground running. Over a hundred years later, onboarding is still an essential part of any organization's hiring process. Companies use onboarding to ensure that new employees have a positive experience and to encourage loyalty and trust.

What are the top ten Employee Onboarding Checklists for new employees?

1. Have a Seat: Prepare a workspace and necessary equipment. Making sure the workspace is ready and the necessary equipment is provided is important to ensure the new employee is comfortable and ready to start work. I've seen first-hand how line managers sometimes tell people to start working as soon as possible, even though there's no room on their team. So, when you do your workforce planning, make sure to think about where people will sit.

2. Say Hi to the Team: Introducing the team and giving an office tour while providing context about the company will help the new employee become more familiar with their new environment and understand the culture of the organization.

3. Tell, don’t sell: Outlining the role expectations, challenges, and responsibilities will help the new employee understand their role and make sure they are working towards their desired goals.

4. Provide resources: Allowing the new employee access to the necessary software and accounts will make them more efficient and allow them to start working straight away. Ensure there’s a handover file from previous employees ready to go through with them.

5. Schedule check-ins: Having regular check-ins will help monitor the employee's progress and make sure they are on track to the teams’ goals.

6. Provide orientation: Providing the new employee with company introduction on their first day, this will help them become more familiar with the company and more efficient when collaborating with other departments.

7. Schedule meetings with a buddy and mentor: Meeting with team members and supervisors will help the new employee understand their role better and start to build relationships with their colleagues.

8. Provide access to relevant training sessions or online training portals: Providing access to relevant training sessions or online training portals will help the new employee stay up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies in the company.

9. Organize a 90-day induction plan: Developing a 90-day plan that outlines the tasks the new employee needs to complete and who they could meet will help them stay motivated and on track.

10. Make sure all necessary paperwork is signed: Ensuring that all necessary paperwork is signed will ensure that the employee is legally compliant with the company and any relevant policies.

Now that you've developed an Employee Onboarding Checklist for new employees, it's time to make sure every employee is set up for success. Every new employee should feel welcomed, supported, and prepared to contribute to the team. Make sure you're doing everything you can to make sure your new employees have the tools and resources they need to be successful.

Let's get to work showing our newest team members how much they mean to us and reassuring them that nobody gets left behind in this workplace.
