Born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Skip Bayless attended Baylor University. His father was an attorney who represented the Chickasaw Nation, with its capital of Ada, Oklahoma. Bayless moved to Chicago after graduating from college and began his journalism career as a general assignment reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper in 1990.

He was moved to sports column writing in 1993, where he remained until 1998 when he joined ESPN as a columnist for its syndicated show Page 2, which aired mainly on Sunday mornings before being cancelled in 2002. In 2003, Skip Bayless Twitter was named a regular contributor to "SportsCenter" and a featured columnist for ESPN.com.

In 2006, he began hosting "The Skip Bayless Show", which aired on ESPN2 daily at 10 pm EST. A year later, the show changed time slots to midnight ET/11 pm CT, but that was cancelled after one season. Later that same year, Bayless became the lead Bleacher Report (B/R) columnist (replacing Jeremy Schaap).

Bayless has received both praise and criticism for his opinions, many of which are considered "hot-take" or "guilty-til-proven-innocent" type declarations. Much of this criticism stems from Bayless's tendency to disregard statistics when criticizing athletes, which Skip Bayless considers an opinion.

Bayless openly admits that he is a staunch believer in the idea that sports are about "the magic." However, he occasionally cites statistics or rational arguments in favour of his argument but often refutes them with evidence supporting his opinion.

Bayless has always been noted for his use of subjective language, which sometimes leads to misinterpretation of his intentions. Bayless is also known for using hyperbole, sensationalism, and tricky word choice when criticizing players or coaches.

The "Chicago Tribune" referred to Bayless as "The First Take Guy." Additionally, he has often been criticized for being condescending towards women in the sports world, predominantly female sportscasters.

Despite this criticism, Bayless has also won praise for his consistent approach to sports questions. ESPN TV analyst and former NFL head coach Jon Gruden has called Bayless one of his favourite analysts and said, "If you know Skip's history and take a look at Skip's work, he will almost always turn out to be right."

Some Dallas women have criticized Bayless for his misogynistic and sexist writing. On July 18, 2012, Bayless attacked the Mavs' Brandan Wright. Bayless' criticism centred on Wright's 11-year-old sister (see below), who had been tweeting about the team, then posting pictures of her appearances at games. The Twitter parody account @NotSkipBayless was created shortly after this incident to mock him.

On Monday, July 22, 2012, Bayless tweeted: "I'm not a racist. I don't hate anybody. OK? Now that that's cleared up. It's Dallas' fault that my 11-year-old daughter is now getting death threats from morons."

He claims he was hacked by people who are against him. Many called out Bayless for being sexist and misogynistic because of this. Others were confused, as his other tweets don't seem to support it.

Bayless had made several appearances in film and television, such as in the 1996 film "Jerry Maguire", where he played a sportswriter at a rival newspaper, and the 2011 Green Day music video "Oh Love" when he appeared himself.

In the 2008 movie "The House Bunny", Bayless appears as a guest on "The View of Sports" with Joan Lunden and Paula Faris. He also has had cameos on shows such as "Weird Science" and was interviewed on ESPN Classic's cartoon series, Cheap Seats.

In 2008, Bayless was featured in the documentary "Kings Ransom". He was interviewed in " and appeared in the 2004 documentary, "The Ohio State University Football Scandal".

Bayless has made many appearances as a guest on "The O'Reilly Factor" on Fox News. From 2002 to 2005, he was a frequent guest on "First Take" alongside Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe. In 2004, he appeared as himself in the AMC series "Dawson's Creek". He was also a regular guest host of ESPN's Fantasy Football Live.

In addition to his role as an analyst for ESPN, Bayless has hosted and presented at various sports events such as the 1996 NCAA Basketball Championship Game and the 2003 NBA All-Star Game. On September 5, 2006, it was reported that Bayless would host a new Sunday morning program on ESPN2.

The show was called "The Skip Bayless Show" and aired at 10 pm EST on Sundays. The one-hour show featured an analysis of the previous day's sporting events with other ESPN personalities.

Skip Bayless account on Twitter has received harsh criticism regarding the Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant, particularly Bryant's lacklustre performance during the 2009 NBA Playoffs. Many have described his commentary as "hateful" and "personal".

Bayless's dismissal of statistics when evaluating players (he often says that data does not matter when discussing greatness) favouring subjective reasoning. The theme of this criticism has become popularly known as "Baylessing".

Bryant and Bayless met each other at the 2005 All-Star Game. During that All-Star Game, Bryant called Bayless "the biggest crybaby" in the NBA. This resulted in a feud between the two, which was noted again when Bryant and Pau Gasol were traded to the Lakers shortly after.

In 2008, before a game against the Lakers, Bryant said: "When I play them I always put certain things on my mind – how Skip will try to make me look bad; how we will make him look bad; and we will make him look like he doesn't know what he is talking about. That's all that can really be on my mind."

The feud was renewed during the 2009 NBA Playoffs. Bayless wrote in his column, "I genuinely like Kobe Bryant, see him as an engaging and entertaining guy with a competitive spirit to spare. But if he were any more self-absorbed, he'd play in a mirror." Following the Lakers' elimination against the Orlando Magic, Bayless put up a series of tweets about how Bryant had choked again in the playoffs. Bryant noticed these tweets and tweeted back, "My mama didn't raise no fool..."

On April 13, 2008, Bayless became the latest addition to the "Cold Pizza" team that moved to ESPN2 when "Cold Pizza" was cancelled. "Cold Pizza" began on March 2, 2007, and originally aired on ESPN2 from 6 am–9 am ET. In May 2008, "Cold Pizza" was cancelled, and the team moved to a new show called "ESPN's First Take", which airs in the same time slot.

Skip Bayless Twitter account appeared regularly on ESPN's morning show First Take, a debate show in the vein of SportsCenter's "Around The Horn". Bayless often makes controversial statements in his analysis of sports topics in his appearances on the show. In 2007 when arguing against Kobe Bryant being labelled an elite basketball player, he said that a pack of wild boars could have stopped Michael Jordan.
