Surviving Despite the odds

An aerial reconnaissance mission for NATO was flown by Army Captain Ilhan durupanar in 1959. The mission for Captain Durupanar was to capture images from an airplane to establish a cartographical representation of an isolated region located in the Turkish Highlands. The government is seeking updated images due to the significant changes in the landscape caused by three major earthquakes that occurred in the previous years. As the journey progressed without any fuss, he suddenly noticed a deserted area and stumbled across an odd and striking formation among the rocks below. After taking photographs, he discovered what appeared to be the remains of a large ship about 6,500 feet above sea level. This discovery may solve the mystery of Noah's Ark, as recounted in the Bible's Book of Genesis. The tale tells of God's loss of faith in humanity due to their evil and sinful ways. Noah is chosen to build an ark and save himself, his family, and the pairs of every animal on earth from a cataclysmic flood. The flood lasted for about 40 days and 40 nights, after which the ark came to rest on the Mountains of Ararat, a peak located in Turkey. For centuries, the story was viewed as a metaphor, but the existence of Mount Ararat and the discovery of evidence of a massive flood in the same area as the captain's photographs have sparked controversy and excitement among explorers and historians. Further research can explore the ship itself and evidence of large-scale natural disasters that can last thousands of years.

Several indicators suggest that animals existed around five or six thousand BC in the area, which was once a freshwater lake. Bedrock tests and soil samples support the theory that around 8,000 years ago, a massive glacier suddenly collapsed, causing the Mediterranean Sea to surge and flood the surrounding areas, including what is now known as the Black Sea. For 300 days straight, the equivalent of 200 Niagara Falls' worth of water flooded the former freshwater lake, causing it to expand one mile every day and get deeper. This natural disaster was so immense that it could have impacted thousands of people and receded only after reaching the size of Colorado. While it is unknown how many people survived the event, experts suggest that survivors may have passed down the story of the flood through generations. In 1985, a 4,000-year-old clay tablet with the cuneiform script was found in an attic in Britain, believed to be an account of the flood described in the Bible, although the exact location of the great flood and where the ark itself landed remain a mystery. Leonard Simmons, a Royal Air Force officer, had collected many artifacts during his travels around the Mediterranean Basin, which he left to his son. One of these artifacts was the clay tablet, which Dr. Irvin Finkel, the Chief Curator for Near Eastern artifacts at the British Museum, was eager to translate. Finkel deemed the tablet special and considered it a crucial piece to the study of cuneiform writings when Simmons brought it to the museum in 1985.

In ancient times, Mesopotamians used cuneiforms to record and track various things like the number of ducks required for a feast,. However, they also documented some exciting historical tales, such as the Epic of Gilgamesh. This poem tells the story of King Gilgamesh, who ruled in Mesopotamia, and begins with a flood that the gods sent to wipe out everything. Scholars estimate that the Epic of Gilgamesh was written around 3 to 4 thousand years ago and is very similar to Noah's Ark. However, it is essential to note that it was written a thousand years before the Noah's Ark story, raising the question of whether there was one original event or many different floods. The Epic of Gilgamesh features a story about Utnapism, an immortal man, who rounds up various animals and saves them in an ark. This story is similar to the Noah's Ark tale, leading scholars to believe that the latter is a direct descendant of the Epic of Gilgamesh. Ultimately, the point of this flood story is to emphasize humanity's survival skills, something that has happened throughout history, including in 2004 in Indonesia and during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. This ancient story's significance is that it inspires and reminds us that we are capable of surviving extraordinary circumstances.
