Lyric Breakdown: “Green Light”
Not like at an intersection

“I do my makeup in somebody else’s car/ We order different drinks at the same bars/ I know about what you did and I wanna scream the truth/ She thinks you love the beach/ You’re such a damn liar!”
New Zealand sensation Lorde brings an unusual (for her) pop vibe to this truly underrated song.
Whereas her breakout hit “Royals” is mostly commentary about misfits and social expectations, this brings it back to the relationship jams young female artists are usually known for. But again, it’s the only prominent one of its kind in her collection.
So while keeping the words just as simple, she brings in the usual refrain of love falling apart at the seams. 💔❤️🩹💔❤️🩹
From the get-go, she lays out how the two of them are growing apart. She applies her makeup elsewhere and implies that they’re not even together when at the same bar.
Of course that 2nd line is a bit awkward as plenty of happy couples “order different at the same bar.” Because, while finding someone mostly the same as you is appealing, usually opposites attract.
Then with the cutting words “I know what you did,” she implies there’s more happening against her than just the distance. That there’s an actual betrayal there.
She confirms this mentioning another woman. “She thinks you love the beach.” So now we get into the real reason this relationship is dissolving. Compounded by the accusation that the partner’s already lying to this other person. Plus, lying about the beach? That’s gotta be its own sin!

“Well those rumors, they have big teeth/ Hope they bite you/ Thought you said that you would always be in love/ But you’re not in love, no more/ Did it frighten you?/ The way we kissed when we danced on the light-up floor?/ On the light up floor….”
Now it’s almost as if she flips the script. From the context, it seems to me there’s now rumors about her. Maybe she’s seeing someone else turn. And she hopes those rumors “bite” the person who started it.
She thought that he’d always be in love with her. But not anymore. By the way, I’ve been trying to be gender-neutral here… but let’s be real, I think we’re assuming it’s a he.
Not just because of heteronormativity, but somehow it seems like it would be far less cutting between lesbians. Or is that just me?
Interesting too how she asks if their kiss on the dance floor frightened him. Why would it? Well, if he’s falling out of love with her… then yes, an all-consuming kiss conveying all the feelings he let go of might.

“But I hear sounds in my mind/ Brand new sounds in my mind/ But honey, I’ll be seeing you ‘ever I go/ But honey, I’ll be seeing you down every road.”
Now we get into the poetic. What are these “brand new sounds?” Well, I suppose they could be anything, since she hears them in her mind.
But I think it’s like when they say “let freedom ring.” A metaphorical sound that signals change on the horizon.
Well, it could be exactly like that, actually. The sounds of freedom… from this relationship.
Then, the bittersweet. I think we’ve all had that moment. Even when you want something to end so badly, there’s still the sense of loss when it does.
With love, you probably do see the person everywhere in those moments. As she says, everywhere you go and down every road.

“I’m waiting for it, that green light, I want it!/ ‘Cause honey I’ll come get my things, but I can’t let go/ I’m waiting for it, that green light, I want it!/ Oh I wish I could get my things… and just let go/ I’m waiting for it, that green light, I want it!”
Now it comes full circle. Even though she’ll miss it when it’s gone, this relationship isn’t good for either of them. Especially not her if the guy’s secretly moving on anyway.
So she wants the “green light.” I think in context we all understand immediately what this means. She wants out, but can’t let go… yet.
Like at a traffic stop, green light means go. So, even though this guy is obviously cheating (which should be enough to end it if she says so)… she still feels like she needs the permission to leave.
I think a lot of us have been here too. The real connection is gone, we have one foot out the door, but can’t walk away. We’re either waiting for someone fundamental to change… or the other person to give us permission.
In other words: just please, please give me the green light. Unlike in a show or movie, or even in real life, a song can express one singular moment in time. We will never know the resolution, but it will perpetually bring us back to that feeling we know better and better as life goes on.
