Bike Riding from San Francisco

Left in Sausalito, California

Many years back, I took a trip to San Francisco with my husband. He had a conference in town, so we decided to enjoy a trip. He had told me earlier that he was depressed, so my goal for this trip was to try to squeeze as much fun in as possible to help. He had pretty much checked out at home, and the kids and I didn't really see much of him lately. As if fun solves depression, but that is another story for another time.

We had been to San Francisco another time for a triathlon, Escape from Alcatraz. That trip we had gone to Alcatraz, Muir Woods, Monterrey and Carmel, and Napa/Sonoma. This time, I needed to make it just as fun and exciting as well.

As we were on the way, we found out my brother who lived in Chicago was also there to visit his girlfriend. We met up with him and on our first full day we went out and rode Segways all over the town. It was a beautiful day and we had a great time out and about. We ended up at a very nice restaurant and ate a fabulous dinner as well.

The next day, my husband and I decided to ride bikes across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito. I had seen that there were little shops and dining places and figured we could spend the day there together and the plan was to take the ferry back to town. So, off we went. It was a beautiful day and there were not many clouds in the sky. We rode at a nice pace on the way and I stopped to take some photos. He wanted to race to get there and I was thinking, this is supposed to be a nice stroll of a ride. When we got to the town of Sausalito, we got off our bikes, and I was ready to explore the town. This is when my husband decided that he could ride back to town and I could take the ferry and we could see who wins. What? I didn't have that in mind and couldn't believe he wanted to leave me there. Really? Well, yes, he did. I was left alone in Sausalito. I did decide to shop a little bit before I headed back. Sausalito is a beautiful little town to explore—I highly recommend. I got to the ferry line and got my bike aboard the ferry and enjoyed the ride back. However, the ride took me near the part of the city that was not near the bike store. So, I ended up shopping this outdoor area and slowly made my way back. I was furious by the time I saw him. He was lying down on the grass, just waiting. I told him he could go ahead and go by himself back to the hotel as I turned my bike in. I told him I was so surprised that he actually left me there. That was not the plan. He just seemed smug to beat me back.

As I look back to the last trip my husband and I took before we got divorced, I could tell that he wasn't even present even while we were together. He had already checked out. It didn't matter what I had planned for us to do. I researched every Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives on Food Network and other restaurants I thought would be fun. I ended up leaving to get the kids so they could get to school and he stayed for a conference. I didn't realize until much later that his girlfriend actually joined up with him after I left—I mean, we could have literally passed each other at the airport—but that is for another story at another time.
