Love less achieve more

A deep desire to nurture, care for and emotionally be attached to someone or something can only be explained as love which, through experience we know is a human flaw. If humans went by the definition then the phrase (“I love you”) wouldn’t be one of the most said phrases that is rarely understood or reciprocated.

For example, a single woman aged 22 fresh out of college with her bachelors in psychology and art history has found a partner to spend her life with. Like any couple they have their ups and downs. She wants her toilet paper up and her partner wants it down. They disagree about little thing like types of candy, but big things are a breeze because money has never been an issue. Five years into the relationship and both individuals are convinced they love each other. They finish each others sentences; they buy a house together, they make it through sickness, and are now enjoying health and insist on adding to their already perfect situation. The woman gets pregnant and is due in December, but after her first trimester falls ill. The woman’s ribs collapse killing the baby and giving the mother multiple puncture wounds severely injuring her. The mother has to have the baby surgically removed. The wound in her chest already open the doctor then proceeds to stitch up the young woman's lung removing the other as it’s productivity had dropped to zero. A week passes and the woman has just now come to and the doctor begins to give his (diagnosis) bad news. Not only should she never participate in contact physical sports but any sport in general is advised against and on top of that she no longer has the ability to conceive. Her complete transition time from where she is now to completely recovered is two years.

During this whole time what do you think her partner will do? Will love cover his newfound detest of his wife for killing their son? What about the guilt that he carries for somehow not fixing the situation? Now that they only have one income will love cover their medical bills one year into treatment? What if her partner wants to participate in outdoor activities? Should they just give up on their whole life because this person had a tragic accident? Because they are attached by love, because this person is their “Whole world”. What about the woman? What should she do now that she’s “holding back” her significant other? What about the eternal voice in her head shaming her for lacking natural ability to give birth? What about the baby she lost and never got to hold?

So, what is love really? Love is a perfect emotion that could only be displayed by perfect beings. To humans, imperfect beings, love is impossible. Instead we should be focused on something we can attain an emotion we can portray correctly. No matter the person, no matter the situation, we would be impervious to the world.

And that’s Loyalty.

Loyalty is the reason that people stay together through it all no matter what. Loyalty is why a father will still come see his children after their mother has verbally and physically abused him. It might appear as love, but love breaks and cracks through those things. As religious people might say “I will let the Lord love you through me”. Which, is a blatant statement saying I have no more love to give so I need to rely on something else to be around. Fathers don’t abandon their children because they don’t love them; they leave because the love for the woman they conceived the child with is gone and had been gone. They leave because that child is now the representation of something they couldn’t attain. We need more loyalty in this world and less love. Love is how we got to where we are today. Lackluster relationships, abandoned children and an ironic, overwhelmingly amount of hatred attempting to be love.
