In August 2020, a truck driver died as he helped rescue children from a school bus crash in Alma, Georgia.

A Ryder box truck driven by 25-year-old Johnathon Grayer of Jacksonville, Fla., collided into the rear end of a stopped school bus as it unloaded students in Bacon County, Georgia. On board the bus was 10 children.

Grayer immediately rushed onto the school bus to make sure the children were okay and to help remove them from the bus. Footage from the bus’ surveillance camera showed Grayer lifting seats off the children who were trapped underneath. He rushed children off the bus, with one boy later asking where the man was who rescued him.

Grayer, suffering from injuries and running on sheer adrenaline, collapsed after he removed this child from the bus. He was transported to the Bacon County Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Jerry Sweat, the school bus driver, and three students were transported to a Jacksonville hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Grayer’s mother, Veronica Grayer, described her son as a man with a “heart of gold.”

10-Year-Old Rescues Students From Bus Crashed in Lake

In a separate 2015 incident, a 10-year-old boy helped rescue a group of students from a school bus after it crashed into a lake in Tampa.

The bus crashed into a lake with 25 students on board in September. Of those students, only one suffered injuries, thanks to the heroic actions of Nico Sierra.

Nico was one of the children on the bus when it slammed into a tree, which sent the bus spiraling into another tree and then crashing into the lake. Children began to scream and cry as chaos broke out. Nico saw a kindergarten student -one of his friends- trapped underwater. He immediately helped her to the front of the bus. He then helped two more students to safety.

Ben Theriot and his mother, Nicole Fields, were out shopping one day when they heard the toddler crying. They noticed him in the backseat with the windows up and the doors locked and knew they had to take action before things turned tragic. The mom called 911 but the boy did not wait for emergency responders to arrive. He searched the car for an item to break the window and found a ratchet. Theriot began hitting the glass until it broke, rescuing and possibly saving the life of that toddler.
