Note: This post was updated significantly on 3/16/2016 and now includes fresh images, in-depth descriptions, and two new interior design styles that take into account current trends. Published first on 12/15/2014.

1. Mid-Century Contemporary

A number of the most recognizable objects in modern design date back to the mid-1900s. It is distinguished by clean lines, simple silhouettes, and organic shapes. The mid-century modern masters, including Saarinen, Niemeyer, Eames, Noguchi, Jacobsen, and others, defined inventive ways to use novel materials like molded plastic, plywood, and aluminum in industrial design. Its components complement a wide range of design aesthetics and are incredibly versatile.

For information on how to achieve the look for your home, see my Mid-Century Modern Design Guide. As stated in the guide, incorporating components from various design eras will keep your home looking current. When decorating a mid-century modern home, taking a purist stance can make your interior design appear a little dated.

The Mid-Century Modern Furniture collection offers carefully chosen items that fit this aesthetic for your shopping and inspiration needs. Most of the items available at DWR and Design Public are prime examples of mid-century modern design.

2. Commercial

This style evokes the industrial era at the turn of the 20th century. It places a strong emphasis on the liberal use of exposed steel with distressed wooden components, which is frequently enhanced by exposed brick walls. Accents in copper tones are common in the contemporary version. Industrial interior design frequently has a rustic and sophisticated vibe.

You can read my article on Industrial Decor Ideas and Design to learn how to decorate your home in this style. This article makes the important point that industrial decor can range from tough vintage with elaborate ornamentation to modern rustic with cleaner lines. You can choose between a lighter, chic appearance and a darker, antique design, depending on your preferences.

3. Maritime

Warm, comforting, and upbeat. The nautical style, also known as coastal or cottage style, captures the essence of New England beach houses. Based on a foundation of white or sand, this interior design trend uses blue as its main accent color.

In terms of construction, nautical décor uses unfinished wood for its tables and chairs along with stylish linen upholstery for your lounge chairs and sofas. You have a wide range of options for decorative accents, including seashells in clear jars, jute ropes, rowing oars, sailboats, and more!

A selection of designs with a cottage aesthetic can be found in our collection for Coastal Furniture and Decor. For furniture that fits this trend, Pottery Barn and Pier 1 are fantastic options.

4.Scandinavian

Scandinavian design, an offshoot of the mid-century modern movement, popularized the minimalist style in interior architecture and continues to do so today. There are numerous subset looks within Scandinavian design itself, despite the fact that the majority of people associate it with IKEA

Scandinavian furniture is plain, modern, and practical, with soft contours, fun accent colors, and a balance of engineered and natural materials. Bauhaus principles are frequently used in Scandinavian designs, which are distinguished by fluid lines, an emphasis on object proportions, and a populist appeal. White and grey tones are the primary colours used in the vast majority of Scandinavian interiors.

Browse through our carefully curated selection of Scandinavian furniture to bring this simple, adaptable style into your home. IKEA and Scandinavian Designs both sell a wide variety of authentic Scandinavian goods.

5. Feminist

The carefree and adventurous spirit of the avant-garde lifestyle is captured by bohemian decor. Rich patterns and vibrant colors, particularly those with red or purple undertones, are creatively applied. The secret is to present a deliberately "messy" appearance. For a cozy atmosphere, layer on textiles (throws, pillows, rugs, tapestries).

When choosing furniture, look for items with an ethnic or nomadic feel. Designs with a Moroccan, Southwestern, or tribal influence are currently popular. Boho style favours metallic, wood, leather, and textile accents in its design.
