I Accidentally Met a Dog Named After My Ex

My attempt to move on failed when I happened to meet a dog with the same name as my ex and found myself thinking about him again.

I might sound a little ridiculous, but this is something that actually happened to me.

I always thought I had moved on from my past relationship because I didn't cry or feel sad about it anymore, even though he would still occasionally cross my mind.

But then I suddenly found myself thinking about him again when I went to a dog café with my best friend and happened to meet a dog with the same name as him. To make things worse, the dog came over to play with me and even lay down next to me.

Let me tell you about the past first.

My ex and I weren't together for very long, and neither of us cheated on the other. But we weren't secure enough in our relationship.

It might sound confusing, but that's how things were.

We loved each other, but deep down, we were both too insecure and didn't trust each other enough.

He was a soldier.

I was just an ordinary civilian working for a private company.

He was often suspicious of me and would test me, too. For example, whenever I went out for a walk with my friends, he would ask whether there were any male or female friends with me, how many people were there, what food we had, what time I would be back, what I was wearing, and so on.

And whenever he pressed me for an answer about something, if I didn't answer immediately but asked him back, 'Why are you asking me that?' he would change the subject or simply drop it. And I guess that only made us understand each other even less.

At the same time, he would sometimes test me in other ways. For example, he once told me that one of his friend's female friends had messaged him.

I thought he might have been watching my reaction to see whether I would get jealous or act irrationally. But I stayed calm and spoke to him normally, even though I was actually a mess inside.

At the time, I thought that was my way of showing respect and trust. I didn't want to turn my emotions into an argument. But if he wanted me to show that I was jealous of him, then I guess I had completely failed that test.

And we argued and fought often. Neither of us was willing to give in very easily.

In the end, it went exactly the way everyone would expect..... We broke up.

We broke up after an argument. There was no third person involved.

I don't know how he felt afterward, but I can honestly say that I was devastated and hurt.

Everything fell apart because of our own actions, not because of anyone else.

I went to work as if I had no heart left.

On the outside, I could still work normally, but inside, I was hurting all the time.

I blamed myself over and over, thinking that there was something wrong with me. I thought I hadn't shown him that I cared enough. I didn't express my emotions enough for him to know how I felt.

During that period, I was almost losing my mind. I lost weight because I could barely eat, I cried often, and even if a man ten times better than my ex had come into my life at that point, no one could have pulled me out of my self-blame and sadness.

He wasn't a handsome or wealthy man, and I wasn't a beautiful or perfect woman either.

But at that time, we were two people who genuinely intended to love each other and believed we would get through everything together.

But everything fell apart because of our own hands.

We weren't secure enough in each other. We both secretly carried our own fears. We were so afraid of making mistakes that we ended up making them anyway.

We argued. We fought. We became exhausted.

And everything came to an end.

Until six months had passed.

I admit that I still thought about him sometimes, but only occasionally.

I wasn't sad anymore. I didn't cry anymore.

Until one day, I didn't want to visit an ordinary cafe. I wanted to visit an animal cafe instead.

My best friend and I searched online for animal cafés and found a dog cafe. Most of the dogs there were cold-weather breeds, such as Alaskan Malamutes, Siberian Huskies, and Samoyeds.

There was no entrance fee. You only had to buy at least one cup of coffee per person.

My best friend and I walked into the dog cafe with smiles on our faces. Every dog there was adorable and friendly.

But then a gray Siberian Husky ran toward me and let out a soft "awoo."

I stroked his thick fur and asked one of the staff members what his name was.

And when I heard it, I froze.

It was my ex's name.

I knew the dog had done nothing wrong. The problem was with my own feelings.

I started thinking about my ex again. Memories flashed back into my mind, and old feelings began to surface, all because I heard a dog's name that happened to be the same as his.

I felt like my attempt to move on had failed. My emotional vulnerability started eating away at me.

Before I knew it, I was hugging that Siberian Husky as if I were hugging someone I hadn't seen in a very long time.

And of course, the dog was probably confused.

But he still let me hug him, even though he had absolutely no idea what was going on.

(From this point on, I will refer to this dog only by the initial A. I don't want to mention his full name because I'm worried about possible consequences.)

After I finally pulled myself together, I let go of the dog and gently patted his head as if nothing had happened.

But that Siberian Husky smiled at me.

Yes! You heard that right.

The dog smiled at me!

My heart melted right then.

My best friend and I went to sit at a table. It was a wooden table with a sofa attached to the wall as the seating.

We drank coffee and ate fruit cake.

Meanwhile, Husky A went off to play with the other dogs. But when he got tired, he ran back to me and gave me another soft "awoo."

I asked A, "Are you tired, A?"

What happened next was unbelievable.

A sat right next to me, pressed himself against me, and rested his head on my shoulder!

But for someone like me, whose attempt to move on had apparently just failed, of course that triggered another flashback of my ex sitting closely beside me just like this.

My heart practically melted right there, even though I pretended on the outside that nothing had happened.

A staff member at the cafe told me that A was a very affectionate dog. If he became too clingy or got too physically affectionate with a customer and the customer wasn't comfortable with it, the staff could take him away from them.

Of course, I refused!

A sat down on the sofa beside me and then rested his head on my lap, too!

Another flashback came back to me—my ex used to rest his head on my lap while we watched movies together.

All I could do was stroke A's head.

He was a dog, after all.

I felt like the universe was testing me just to mess with me.

As if it were testing whether I had really moved on or not.

He still had some kind of effect on me, even though all that was left was his name.

Why did I have to experience something like this?

At that moment, the one sitting beside me was still A.

He had just changed from a person into a dog.

But at least a dog doesn't argue with me.

He's innocent, playful, and when he's tired, he simply comes over and lies beside me, looking for someone to cuddle with.

There was nothing but comfort.

And I started wanting to have a dog of my own.

But I still can't have one because the place where I live isn't really suitable for keeping a dog.

After that, I became a regular fan of that dog cafe.

I started visiting the dogs there two or three times a month—almost every week, actually.

And I began thinking that if I ever had a place suitable for it and got the chance, I would definitely have a dog of my own.

As for the name A, the feelings associated with it gradually began to fade.

The A standing in front of me was just a dog.

I think I'm finally starting to truly move on.

Even though my ex might still appear in my thoughts from time to time, I don't feel sad anymore.

And those memories will probably continue to fade until I eventually stop thinking about him unless I have a reason to.

Now, even if I meet another dog or person named A, I don't think I'll feel anything about my ex anymore.

It's over.

And I've accepted that.

Thank you for reading my story.

To anyone who is going through the process of moving on, I hope you can move on soon.

Crying isn't wrong. Think of it as a way of letting your feelings out.

Please don't blame yourself.

Just learn from what happened and take whatever lessons it has to offer.

When your heart is ready and you can accept everything that happened, you will move on naturally without having to force it.

And it's not something you need to rush.

Even if it takes a year, that's okay.

Sometimes, going through something like this simply shows us that we truly loved someone with a pure heart.

Being honest with your own feelings is enough. :)
