Holi, also known as the Color Festival, is one of the most popular festivals in Nepal. It occurs on the day of the full moon in the month of Nepali Fagu (February to March in the Sun Calendar) and lasts for two days. The festival takes place from March 20 to 21, 2019, and from March 9 to 10, 2020. After Dashain and Tihar Festival, Holi was celebrated with a victory over evil and the coming of spring. During this colorful festival, visitors from Nepal and abroad will pour in dried flour and colored water to express their sincere blessings and good wishes.
Background of Holi
The origins of the Holi Festival can be traced back to "Mahabharata", a famous Indian legend. According to legend, King Hiranyakashipu was arrogant and did not allow the people to worship King Vishnu. Prince Prahlada, however, was very devoted to Vishnu and openly opposed his father. This made Hiranyakashipu angry. From then on, the king ordered his sister Holika to burn the prince on the night of the full moon. Under the blessing of God Vishnu, Prahlada was unharmed when Holla was burned to ashes. As the prince came out of the fire, the people sprinkled him with colorful water, expressing good praise and hatred for what was bad.
Nepal Holi Festival Traditions
Unlike the Indian Holi culture, the Holi Festival in Nepal has a special ceremony for the construction of a wooden pole. On this day, Nepali women wear beautiful Sari with beautiful accessories, and they go around the pole to pray for blessings. Durbar Square and the surrounding streets turn into a sea of water, colors, and music. And you will have the opportunity to see some of the most respected artists performing on stage. On the eighth day, the festival ends with the Holi bonfire.
