As we age, we have to make changes to our lifestyle and health habits. It becomes more of a priority to monitor what we eat, what vitamins we take and also to get on an exercise regimen that we can fit into our lives. These changes have to meet the challenges we face as our body ages and it may not move as quickly as we used to.

It is important to watch our food daily and be sure to include a balance of whole grains, fruits and veggies, as well as some comfort food which we all need. Reading about the health challenges we face is easier with all the available information out there for us to peruse. However, we need to realize that everything we read on the internet is not necessarily true. So, if we make any drastic changes in diet or our health regimen, we should check with our doctors.

It is important for us to try to have less stress in our lives as well. We can take up activities such as yoga which is known to relieve stress. Also, we can learn how mindfulness can be be added to our lives and help us to let go of stress, anger and everyday obstacles. Mindfulness is not easy to achieve… the first few times you try to sit in silence you will probably fail. But keep at it! It will bring you peace and comfort on those days that just get to you.

Exercises for Seniors:

There are many fun ways to stay in shape as a senior. Zumba has become a popular way to enjoy dance moves and get a good cardio workout. Pilates and stretching are two of the most important forms of exercise we can add to our routine to relieve tension in our muscles and keep them healthy and elongated. Stretching has become more important as we age. When you wake up in the morning with a stiffness somewhere, don’t fret – just stretch it out. Your body will thank you for it.

Some seniors have taken up golf, pickleball and tennis to keep in shape. Also, walking continues to be one of the best exercises for you and the best way to lose weight.

Walking can be healing in many ways. When walking you can get your thoughts together, enjoy the world around you and relax listening to a book or your favorite music playlist. Personally, I have started listening to audiobooks while I walk. It makes the time pass, and I feel as if I am enjoying a story at the same time. Plus think of it as doubling your reading goals for the year. I usually am reading one regular book and one audiobook at a time. It helps you keep up with all the authors you love.
