Chapter One

People slowly migrated into the large ballroom. Intricate chandeliers and golden accents greeted each one who entered. The molding decorating the walls were crafted with such care that it never failed to amaze those who saw it. Maids, busters, and guards all dressed their best for the special occasion that occurred only once a year. Groomed suits and sparking gowns adorned bodies as people entered. Meaningless compliments spilled from the mouths of many as they greeted their old acquaintances; introducing their children to one another. Across the room others stuffed their mouths full with food. Each dish hand selected by the many involved in planning. Every detail was even more so important this year; it was special.

A '100th Anniversary' banner hung across the large stained glass windows along the west facing wall. The school, Guardians Legacy, has officially been open for a century. People traveled near and far to attend this special event. Those who held positions in the lower social ranking even took the journey. Their mixed ancestry or lack of a gift/power caused them to be the ordinary ones in this story -similar to betas in an alpha-beta-omega story. They often times didn't travel to such lengths to attend such events with the adorned upper class, those of true descent or "chosen-ones."

But of course there was a reason for them to depart from their homes. The 100th year marked the beginning of a new era. The doors to the school were finally opened to those of any heredity or magical possessions. As long as you had roots leading back to the guardians and knowledge of this unknown world, you were invited.

The clearing of a throat caught the attention of all the guests. The multitude of eyes drew themselves to the makeshift-stage underneath the large windows and banner. With stars in his eyes and the sun by his side, the man began his introduction. "I, Man in the Moon, am truly honored to be able to help this institution grow to what it has become today. Though I will say most of my great ideas come from my wonderful wife here beside me today, Woman in the Sun, they would not have come true without all of you people standing here in this room. I am so incredibly proud of the amount of progress we have made in the past century and am happy to officially announce the open door policy allowing anyone to now attend Guardians Legacy. My daughter Luna will also be joining all of your children here with you this year and my son will be finishing out his last year. If any of you incoming students in the crowd are in need of anything please ask either one. Though Helios has put quite a few extra craters in the moon during his childhood-" A small round of laughter broke out in the room before silencing when Moon began to talk once more. "I assure he has passed his rebellious stage and can be quite helpful if your incoming student ever finds their self in need. Now, before I go off on another tangent, we can't wait to see all the new faces this year! Enjoy the party!"

A round of applause circled the room before everyone began enjoying themselves once more.

"Luna! There you are!" The faded platinum blonde hair of December North came bouncing toward the starstruck girl. Her arm wrapped around her best friends shoulders since she was considerably shorter, guiding them toward the dessert table. "Have you heard who's going to be going to school this year!?"

Luna easily picked up on the high pitched excitement coating her enthusiastic friend. December wore her heart on her sleeve, much like her father Mr. Claus. Luna, on the other hand, often kept as much as she could about herself to herself. She had issues letting people in but for good reason. The two were opposites, anyone could tell, but yet they still got along so well. It was the main aspect with drew them together. December was the extrovert and Luna was the introvert. "Arlo?"

"What, no!" A blush ran across December's cheeks, a deep contrast to her pale skin. "Well yes, but no! Not him, guess again."

"Who?"

"Take a guess."

"No."

With a mouth full of cake, a whine slipped past December's mouth. "You're no fun."

Luna simply rolled her eyes. Picking up a chocolate covered strawberry, Luna allowed herself to scan the people in the venue. After attending many events as a child due to the position her parents held, she could name almost everyone in the room. It felt suffocating.

"What's up bitches!"

"Rosalind!" December quickly engulfed the girl dressed head to toe in red. Rosalind was quick to accept the hug, giving Luna's butt a swat when she didn't receive a greeting. She had always been the touchy type despite Luna's annoyance -she was Cupid's daughter after all.

An exaggerated sigh left the free-spirited newcomer. "It's been too long! It's not fun sneaking into bars by myself. I miss my partners in crime."

"Last time we almost got caught."

"But we didn't."

"December-"

"That's right! We even got free drinks."

"Rosalind-"

"You saved us! We love you so much!" The two energetic girls pulled Luna into a hug. Loud laughter left the two as the swayed around the table of sweets.

"Okay, okay!" Despite the moon girl's attempts to escape the attack, a smile was planted on her face from the memories. "I can't breathe!"

It wasn't until a loud set of gasps left the crowd did the three separate. Chills ran up people's spines. A gust of wind, almost in the shape of horses, sprinted across the room extinguishing every lit candle. The darkness that settled upon the crowd ignited a sense of fear.

"Calm down everyone," Man in the Moon stepped onto the stage once more this evening. Stars flowed from his hands and light the room with a soft glow. "There's nothing to worry about. I'm sure the outside door were just left-"

The words fell from Man's mouth when he spotted the shadowed figure walking onto the stage. "It's been a while, old friend."

"Pitch Black."
