GAC Really Needs to Learn From Hallmark

A look at how Hallmark doing right by every marginalized group seems to trigger the immensely backwards-thinking GAC

You know, I've never even heard of GAC Family until about 3 or 4 years ago, but I've learned enough about that channel via online stories. I'm never watching that channel, and the reason is simple: they are completely ass backwards. Let me put it this way. If you take Hallmark, remove the charm, flush it down the toilet, pull it back up with a plunger, have a skunk spray on it, and then toss the rotting remains in a garbage dump, it would still be a better alternative than GAC Family.

I've watched Hallmark for about a decade--both channels, in fact. There's the Hallmark Channel, and then there's Hallmark Movies and Mysteries, and those of you who have read a few of my stories should know about the latter. Hallmark Channel's usually the home for the rom-coms and the vast plethora of holiday-themed films with a star studded cast. We get the holiday stuff on HM&M as well, but on that channel, we are treated to the mystery film series, which I absolutely adore.

Another good attribute about Hallmark: they are inclusive, and that's what we need in this society. Hallmark had always been inclusive, but in recent years, it's increased. We've seen movies that have seen representation from several groups who have been (and still are) marginalized in society, and recent years have seen LGBT+ representation as well. This includes the final episode of Good Witch, which was the first piece of Hallmark programming to feature an LGBT+ kissing scene. So what great moment resulted in this long overdue shift? It was this:

The grinning clown who looks like he could be The Croat's (from The Walking Dead: Dead City) twin brother is Bill Abbott, who used to run Hallmark until 2020. From what I remember reading about him, well...let me just say that seeing the letters L, G, B, T, and Q together in that order drive him to have such idiotic hissy fits. The guy is as homophobic as the day is long; I've heard all of the stories. So where Bill "Don't Say Gay" Abbott now? Well, he's now running GAC Family. Oh, how bloody convenient.

I can't stand GAC Family. I've never watched that channel, but from what I've learned, they are the complete opposite of Hallmark, absolutely no representation outside of their ass-backwards viewpoints. GAC stands for "Great American Country," which is another reason why I hate that channel. If there's one thing I can't stand, it's patriotism being used as an excuse to be bigoted and hateful, and that's what GAC Family is doing. Despite this, we are seeing people who have done Hallmark's stuff now jumping ship to GAC, and among them is this person:

I've already said everything I needed to say about Candace Cameron Bure in an earlier story. You know who else did? Hilarie Burton. Hilarie hit the nail on the head: CCB is an absolute bigot. Even worse, she doesn't think about who can be affected by her ignorant views. People like, oh I don't know, one of her Fuller House co-stars?! Juan Pablo Di Pace, who stole the entire series with his performance as Fernando, the husband of DJ's BFF, Kimmy Gibbler, came out as a gay man in 2019. So CCB clearly couldn't stand him. Oh, and it's known that CCB's longtime TV sister, Jodie Sweetin, hasn't really talked to her since CCB clutched her pearls against the LGBT+ community.

In fact, and here's proof that karma truly exists, Sweetin would go on to star in A Cozy Christmas Inn, which is the sequel to Christmas Under Wraps...which CCB starred in! And after CCB left the Aurora Teagarden series on life support, Sweetin has her own HM&M series about to start up, and she's basically the face of Hallmark's holiday films. But sure, CCB, keep clutching those pearls at GAC if it helps you sleep at night.

And that's basically what GAC Family is: a bunch of bigoted pearl-clutchers. Not Hallmark. Hallmark is everything GAC Family needs to be: inclusive, open, welcoming, caring, and most of all...human. Hallmark's movies show representation of everyone from all races, backgrounds, and orientations. GAC Family needs to look at what Hallmark's doing and take notes, but let's face it, it won't happen. We will see a Super Bowl parade in Cleveland before we ever see GAC Family get their heads out of their anti-inclusive asses.

Great topic to talk about. I did made comments on Hallmarks Facebook groups long before Covid and they made some great changes, more people of color as main character and they also have stories made in foreign countries besides the US.

This was an eye opening article. Glad to hear that Hallmark is progressive now. I haven't seen it in years. Shame on Candace Cameron Bure! I hope GAC Family fails miserably!

You've made alot of good points. I tried GAC Family, but I couldn't tolerate long enough to care about their existence. They should rename it: ACC (Ass Clown Circus).
