For All the Good Times

Supporting your spouse is everything.

Where do I start? I’ve been in a relationship now for going on 4 years. As a matter of fact, it will make four years in March. We’ve had our issues, believe me, we’ve had our share but it’s looking like we just might make it through this time together. The reason why I say just might make it is this.

We haven’t always been supportive of each other at all. He’s really big into comics and character creating and I’ve never understood any of it to be honest with you. He has several notebooks around the house that have names jotted down in them. Weights and sizes etc. I’ve always wondered what is going on his head that makes him write all of this stuff down all day long. I’ve seen him get up out of his sleep in the middle of the night and start writing down stuff or leaving notes in his phone.

It’s interrupted dinner before. It’s taken time away from vital conversations over and over again. One day I sat down and I said okay, I want to be a part of this thing that consumes you. Let me in on what it is that you do all day long from sun up to sun down. I know it had to be something he was more than passionate about so I wanted to know more about this man that I love so much.

He sat me down and took a deep breath. It was at that moment, I knew I’ve asked too much but there was no turning back. 5 hours late, I was even more confused than anything possible. I knew that he had a few flagship characters that he was running with as his front line. I also knew he had some teams made up and was part of a Facebook group that supported independent comics and writers.

I was on board to support him from that moment on. Sitting through his story time and seeing that passion in his eyes as he broke down every detail to me on a level that I could feel how he felt about the work he had been doing for months. Ever since we had that sit down talk and I got somewhat of a better understanding of what it is he does, he’s made more progress over the past year than he’s made before. You see, his past relationship wasn’t so supportive of anything he ever wanted to do in life.

She was mean-spirited. Evil if you want to put it that way. He’s told me how the relationship was when they were together. It was far from unicorns and rainbows but he knew he found a good thing once we really got into each other.

Now, on to why I felt like he wasn’t supportive of me. I’ve been wanting to get into photography and blogging for a while now. Not for money or recognition really but mainly for the passion of expressing myself and things like that. We travel a lot and I’m quick to pull out my phone and take photos of things that I find fun and interesting. He nags me all the time about it. He get’s upset about my phone usage and me always using Google to find out what something is all about, but then once I find something out and we end up having a great time, he thinks back and will apologize somewhat for how he acted.

I work a normal job for the most part. I work from home so it’s nice but it can be boring at times. You just want a change in scenery after a few months of being stuck in one room taking back to back phone calls for idiots that should just go back to a flip phone and be done with life. I have asked him to maybe help me with decorating the office space a little bit and that would make me feel better about what I do all day. He didn’t understand what I meant by that until he too started working from home.

During his training, he was able to be in the room with me because we both had on headsets for the most part and he couldn’t hear my calls and I couldn’t hear his instructor, so it worked out. He soon saw how boring the room was and how it needed to have some things changed around in it. We had a long conversation about all of the photos that I’ve taken during our trips or just around town. He asked me if I wanted any of those printed out on a canvas and used as artwork in the room. I now have about 20 canvas photos of things that I love. Memories that we’ve created with the kids over the 4 years of our relationship. Good times… Happy thoughts.
