Little did the inhabitants know that the stones used for construction were embedded with millions of tiny diamonds, remnants of an asteroid impact that occurred 14.5 million years ago in Bavaria. In the opal capital of the world, Coober Pedy in Australia, residents have taken an unconventional approach to living – underground. Originally settled for opal mining, the town now houses around 2500 residents from different countries in subterranean dwellings. What began as a tent directly in the mine for shade evolved into an underground town featuring shops, an opal gallery, museums, and more. Coober Pedy has transformed into a popular tourist attraction, offering a glimpse into a subterranean lifestyle.

On the other side of the globe, in Manawa, Nebraska, USA, a town officially listed with a population of one challenges conventional norms. Elsie Eiler has been the mayor, clerk, treasurer, librarian, tavern keeper, and bartender since 2004. As the last remaining resident in a town that once had 150 people in the 1930s, she manages all aspects of the town, paying taxes to herself and casting votes for herself as the mayor.

Viganella, Italy, faced perpetual darkness during winter due to surrounding mountains casting shadows. However, an engineer devised an ingenious solution by placing a large mirror high on the opposite slope. Operated by a computer, this mirror reflects sunlight onto the central square of Viganella for at least six hours a day during the darkest months, illuminating the town and providing a unique solution to their shadowy predicament.
