Ideas that don't break the bank

Going on a date can be nerve racking, especially the first date. After all, first impressions matter and the date can determine if things go further. Many daters fall into the trap of being too impressive. They want to spend all this money in hopes that it will impress their date. However, this can be a mistake. So, here are some fun cheap date ideas.

  1. Cook together. You can learn about a person when cooking, what their favorite food is, ect. To spice things up (if this is more than a first date or if you are daring enough) have one person be blindfolded. The person blindfolded makes the food while the other person leads. See how the food turns out. It is sure to give laughs!
  2. Go on a coffee date. This is perfect if it is the first date or you have been together for years. Coffee shops serve more than just coffee, so you are more likely to get a 'yes.' Plus, coffee shops are convenient and usually close to other date activities if the date goes well. Not to mention, coffee is not expensive.
  3. Go on a picnic. This, of course, is weather permitting. However, it is a cheap meal and way to get to know each other. If the weather is not wonderful, try an indoor picnic. Lay out a blanket on the floor and use paper plates.
  4. Go hiking. This also is weather permitting. However, this is free and a great way to get exercise. I would not recommend this for a first date though, just in case there is no connection. Then it might be awkward walking next to each other in silence.
  5. Free museum/art gallery. Check your neighborhood events. Many communities host free museum or art gallery nights. In fact, there might be free concerts in your area.
  6. Go to a local pool. Again, weather permitting. There is nothing better than going to a pool in the summertime. It is also a perfect first date because it is in a public place. If you are located near an ocean, spend a day at the beach. Depending on your budget, you can try a water park. There are coupons available and most water parks offer discounts on certain days.
  7. Go to an arcade. Sure, the well-known ones can be expensive but there are some smaller ones that are not as pricey. Have dinner before you go and check for coupons.
  8. Go to a drive in movie. Depending on your location these can be easy to find and pretty cheap. Some drive in movies are pay-by the car. Way cheaper than going to a theater.
  9. Find a local comedy club. There are some cheaper ones out there. While these might not be well-known comedians they are sure to bring at least one laugh. Do not forget to check for coupons.
  10. Go mini golfing. This is fairly inexpensive and can be lots of fun. Just be careful not to unleash your competitive side too much if it is a first date.
  11. Go stargazing. This is depending on your location. It can be extremely romantic and it is free! Plus, it can be a great way to get to know each other.
  12. Go camping/build a bonfire and make smores. Camp grounds are usually inexpensive, but if you are on a budget build a bonfire and make smores. Just be cautious about the location and make sure it is on a no burn day. This is a great way to enjoy nature and get to know each other.
  13. Go on a bike ride. You can explore the city like you have never been there. Bike riding is a great form of exercise and can be playful. If you do not own a bike, most cities offer cheap bike rentals. Some cities offer motorized scooters as well.
  14. Go to a park and feed the ducks. No explanation needed.
  15. Join a rec league. This can be a good way to make friends as well and maybe you can find a double date opportunity. Playing on the same team can be challenging if one partner is really good at the sport and the other is not. Try to pick something that is in the middle.
