Confirmation Bias

Treated as inhuman

By Seashell Harpspring Published 12 days ago 3 min read

Throughout some points in my life, I can tell if I am being treated as equal as those around me, and when not. Recalling what had happened in situations is never fully clear. We all try to be sincere and take into account everyone's retelling of a situation. This becomes different when being treated inhumanly.

I can tell when this is happening because instead of someone being genuine trying to recall or fix a situation, they write themselves as the only one with the correct version of a tale or their telling is where there is extreme confirmation bias of wanting to see my actions all within a particular way. This can go both ways too. All positive with thinking everything I or someone does is all wonderful and for the best. There is also the other way around where even neutral tones or looks are interpreted as horrible.

It is frustrating dealing with this especially when there is clear evidence or showing of a situation as opposite of what aligns with someone's memory interpretation. Many people who lack empathy do this where they see only what they want to see within a situation. People who want to keep up a certain image dismiss anything brought up as a memory in an interaction with them that does not go with how they have to be able to see themselves. Anyone who brings up remembering when they weren't absolutely wonderful to them hurts too much and they automatically dismiss the conversation about the memory.

Trying to have a relationship with people who don't treat you as towards equal to them does not work out. There is of course titles and status of the world. Some people have a better understanding or degree in what others don't. There are talents some have that is more difficult for others, but overall we should be within the realm of the same humanity. Each of us should give weight and care to another person's life and perspectives or we will begin to come to treat someone who doesn't deserve it as a creature instead of an aquaintance.

When we don't give others any benefit of the doubt or grace of any kind, it begins an arrogance of feeling as if knowing better about the other person's life more than they do. It brings people to try and control another living human being instead of living and working alongside them with proper boundaries in place.

When speaking to someone about how I remember something where they were aggressive at me, but they have to see themselves not that way leads them to not see where they have been that manner of way. It also may lead my regular actions to become extreme words that they are not. Me trying to vouch for my side of recollection turns into "harrasment." Me trying to show proof behind my actions turns into me being "difficult." This is all invalid exaggerations that should not be used when someone is trying to speak about their version of reality.

Having some people tell me how those who see me as inhuman speak about me is disturbing. It is like talking about a strange apparition instead of a person with a whole life, past, and space within the physical realm of the universe. I may think a bit different from others, but I am not a shadow in your house at night. I am a person who has a budget, plans, and life to live the same as the rest.

Usually people's memories should at least be some similar with mistakes, but to me when they are two completely different stories it is because one of the parties wants to see the other as not a respectable part of society which is a huge problem. Do better to step away from confirmation bias so that others don't get hurt.
