How you interact with others has a big impact on your life and those around you. Communication is something we all do on a daily basis, whether we know it or not, but it may take many various forms depending on the context. It’s not always what you say to people that matters, but how you say it; other times, it’s what you don’t say that makes the most impact! This collection of suggestions will assist you in honing your communication skills so that you may have a good influence on the people in your life one conversation at a time.

1) Talk responsibly

The most straightforward strategy to enhance your communication skills is to ensure that you are accountable for what you say. Take some time before speaking to consider what you’re going to say and how your words will be perceived by others. We have a propensity to act like toddlers as grownups, blaming everything but ourselves for our mistakes. Many disputes in your interactions with people can be avoided by making sure you’re accepting responsibility for your actions.

2) Always give priority to the listener

When it comes to communicating successfully, remember that what you say isn’t always as essential as how you say it. Misunderstandings might occur if your communication is intended for one individual but ends up reaching another. For instance, if I say, “Good job!” With a sarcastic tone, my statements are likely to be misinterpreted as an insult by the intended receiver.

3) Body language

We all know that body language accounts for 80% of communication. To enhance your communication abilities, you must first be able to successfully regulate and manage your body language. Try communicating with others while seeing yourself in the mirror. Examine how your gestures and posture, in addition to what you say orally, convey specific ideas. Also, pay attention to those around you: do they appear open or closed? Use this information to help you decide what to do next.

4) Think before speaking

Effective communication necessitates the ability to listen. It’s also one of those abilities that improve with time. You take charge of talks and make it appear that it is your obligation to comprehend people by opening with questions rather than comments. You’ll be able to sympathize with them and connect on a deeper level as a result.

5) Be patient while speaking

According to studies, raising your voice and increasing your volume increases the likelihood of people becoming defensive. Speak gently and avoid screaming to prevent confrontation and obtain better outcomes. Avoid being overly verbose: the purpose of good communication isn’t just what you say, but also how you say it. Keep track of how long it takes you to complete speaking so that others have time to respond.

6) Read before sending.

Only around 10% of communication is dependent on words, according to estimates. This suggests that how you say something, not what you say, accounts for almost 90% of your message. Putting yourself in the shoes of your reader may help you enhance your communication skills by filling in any gaps or miscommunications produced by body language, verbal tone, facial expression, and other factors. Read an email aloud before sending it (and after it’s been sent), or have someone else read it to you.

7) Think before responding

Feedback won’t assist you if you’re not ready. Make a list of your facts and take notes on everything you hear so you can refer back to them later. Even better, add something like, “I thought it could be good for us to go through our chat again at your leisure.” Is it all right? Then write an email or phone straight away to avoid leaving things hanging.
