Eight years of hard work to achieve Yunnan "Embroidering"

In August 2012, the second "Gusu Embroidery Girl" skill competition was held in Suzhou City. In this competition, a male student appeared for the first time. He was Li Yunchen, a boy born in the 1990s in Kunming. In this competition, Li Yunchen attracted great attention from the local media in Suzhou due to his superb skills and was dubbed the "embroidering" of Yunnan Province.

Li Yunchen had been learning Su embroidery skills in Suzhou for four years before she made her appearance in the "Gusu Embroidery Lady" competition. Li Yunchen says he was first introduced to embroidery at the age of 16 and developed a strong interest in it. "I love painting and traditional Chinese culture, and after I learned about embroidery, I learned the craft by myself as a hobby," he says. Li Yunchen said that he had learned embroidery skills from many masters in Kunming, and also traveled to Chuxiong, Guizhou, and other places. "I feel embroidery is a very promising folk art, but at present do very few people, is a blank market." 18 years old, determined to embroidery interests into a career of Li Yunchen, decided to go to Suzhou to learn Suzhou embroidery.

Suzhou embroidery, the first of the four famous embroideries in China, is characterized by beautiful patterns, meticulous embroidery, and many stitches, representing the highest level of embroidery skills. After Li Yunchen came to Suzhou, she went around looking for the master of Suzhou embroidery and traveled all over the south of the Yangtze River. She once studied art with Ms. Yao Huifen. Li Yunchen said that learning art is very hard. "I study in the embroidery village of a famous teacher during the day, and I have to accept processing work commissioned by my peers at night. I get up at 5 o 'clock every day, and often have to work until the next morning."

Embroidery is delicate work, a work that needs half a year to complete, if you want to learn the embroidery skills of people, animals, and landscape paintings, it will take years or even decades. To shorten the period of study, when Li Yunchen is embroidering Zhuang to work, often borrow "go to the toilet" time, "pass by" besides other embroidery workers, and carefully study the embroidery skill that others are good at. "The process of learning Suzhou embroidery was too long. It took me three years to learn what it took others 10 years to learn just by being eager to learn."

After 8 years of hard study, Li Yunchen not only mastered the skills of Suzhou embroidery, but also pioneered the Chinese painting of splash-ink embroidery, and was good at using her cross-stitch method to create freehand embroidery of splash-ink in Chinese painting. Over the years, Li Yunchen's embroidery works have won awards in major art exhibitions.

Entrepreneurship drives home people to create a career

After the rapid development of technology and high recognition in the industry, in 2013, Li Yunchen decided to return to his hometown Kunming, giving up job opportunities and a good platform in Suzhou. "Back to my hometown, I want to develop this craft and drive more people out of poverty through embroidery."

Embroidery is a folk skill with a history of nearly three thousand years. It is one of the "needlework" in ancient China. People who know embroidery used to be all over the country. After returning to Kunming, Li opened his studio in Taoli New Village. In Li Yunchen's view, this Kunming native embroiders have embroidery skills, only need a little training, inculcating the concept of modern embroidery technology, can embroider more satisfactory works.

Tao Li New village aunt Tao has been more than 50 years old because since childhood physical disability, the source of life depends on her skills, knitting, and embroidery are good hand. After Li Yunchen is informed that aunt Tao has an embroidery foundation, find her actively seeking cooperation. "I showed the works of Suzhou embroidery to Aunt Tao, explained the technical characteristics of Suzhou embroidery carefully, and demonstrated the techniques of Suzhou embroidery." Grandma Yan, 79 years old, is the oldest embroider in the studio. The peony scarves she embroidered with Suzhou embroidery are exquisite in workmanship and are well received by many customers. In 2014, Li Yunchen took part in the Kunming Cultural Expo with his works, and his development model attracted the attention of the Kunming Women's Federation. In November last year, Kunming Women's Entrepreneurship and Innovation Demonstration Center, the first business incubation platform for "women" in Kunming, was inaugurated, and Li Yunchen's embroidery studio was invited to enter the center.
