We all want to be happy, and if we’re not happy, we assume it’s because something in our lives isn’t the way we want it to be. We think that if we could just get rid of this or change that, everything would be perfect. There’s no doubt about it — there are things in life that affect our happiness negatively, like problems with family or friends, losing your job, or not having enough money to pay the bills.

1) Believe You Deserve to Feel Happy

There are numerous things that can keep you from being happy no matter how great life seems on the surface. But by following these eight tips to be happier in life, you can get rid of those unnecessary roadblocks and start living a more joyful existence. It’s time to believe you deserve it!

2) Love Yourself First

The better you feel about yourself and your life, the happier you’ll be, right? Wrong! There are numerous things that can keep you from being happy no matter how great life seems on the surface. But by following these eight tips to be happier in life, you can improve all aspects of your life. And when you improve all aspects of your life, happiness will follow naturally. Here are some ways to start: (1) Love yourself first; (2) Make sure others love you too; (3) Live a healthy lifestyle; (4) Design your life; (5) Set goals using methods proven to work for thousands of years; (6) Improve communication with others; (7) Get more sleep at night; and (8) Live longer and healthier lives.

3) Exercise Regularly

Did you know that exercising regularly—at least 20 minutes of intense exercise a day, five days a week—can make you happier? Physical activity is great for your physical and mental health, improving your mood and giving you more energy. And when was the last time you worked out every day? If it’s been awhile, try incorporating exercise into your daily routine!

4) Treat Yourself

Did you know that people who treat themselves with things like a new shirt, new shoes, or a meal out are happier for a short period of time but quickly return to their pre-purchase mood level? But if you treat yourself by doing something meaningful (like getting rid of junk from your apartment or helping someone less fortunate), you’ll be happy for a longer period of time.

5) Change Your Mindset

Studies show that having a fixed mindset can prevent you from trying new things, take risks, and push yourself outside your comfort zone. Believe it or not, you can actually train your brain to adopt a growth mindset.

6) Support Those Who Matter Most

Get a mentor from The Secret movie and find someone who can offer you advice on how to succeed in life. You should also be willing to help others do the same. If people are kind enough to share their wisdom with you, be sure you’re willing and able to reciprocate. It may seem counterintuitive, but if you think about it, helping other people will likely make your own life better—and it doesn’t hurt that it just might put a smile on your face.

7) Surround Yourself With Positive People

Did you know gaming is linked to higher levels of depression and anxiety among teens? In an online forum, John Cacioppo, PhD, director of The Center for Cognitive and Social Neuroscience at University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy and a professor at its Department of Psychology, says that when we play games on devices that are capable of high-speed Internet connection with other people (ie. online games), we end up outsourcing our connections with real people. The problem?

8) Get Help If Necessary

There are numerous things that can keep you from being happy no matter how great life seems on the surface. But by following these eight tips to be happier in life, you will most certainly reach a state of contentment and joy. If for some reason you’re still not feeling fulfilled, don’t be afraid to seek help. Whether it's through social support networks or taking advantage of professional services, your overall health will benefit from seeking out help when necessary. It may seem daunting at first, but remember that often others have traveled down paths similar and have succeeded. Follow their lead!
