You’re awesome, and you want the person viewing your profile to know that in 4 seconds or fewer before they swipe. Here are the six photos you need to ace that moment:

The Headshot

Credit: Dylan Patrick

This photo is from your neck to the top of your head. It can be your best selfie in your camera roll, but you’re best off taking a fresh picture of the current you. Avoid sunglasses or hats, and try to get a little bit of light in your eye to add that sparkle. Choose a shirt that complements your skin tone. Know your better side. With enough practice, you’ll know your better angle.

Weird psychology goes into the angle of your shot. Ladies should look directly at the camera, smile, and “Squinch” (slightly narrowing your eyes). Some people say men should look to the side of the camera and look “tough” or “slightly grin.” Personally, I like all profiles with big smiles and bright eyes.

Full Body

Your second photo should be the full body shot showing all your best qualities. Flatter your best features. If you’re chiseled, show the world your masterpiece. If you look good in a well-fitting dress, bust it out and prove it. Again, choose colors that flatter your skin tone. Don’t use bathroom or gym photos; aim instead for plain walls or outdoor backgrounds. Know your good side and try multiple angles. A good friend or phone stand will be helpful for this endeavor.

Group Shot

The group shot should never be your first picture, but it has a purpose. This photo shows your social circle and gives you context. It’s a chance to show you having fun and exploring those hobbies you say you enjoy. This photo can be super unflattering if used correctly. What does a big laugh look like on you? Do you tilt your head back or cover it? Do you like to sit back with beers with the fellas or are you more likely to be caught throwing a frisbee outside? Including a warm group photo makes the viewer feel welcome. The right person will want to hop in and join your board game night.

Family

This is for those looking for more than a hookup. Include a picture with the family, either extended or nuclear. It makes you look normal. Bonus points for holiday photos, and 2x points if you’re wearing a cute sweater. If your family is not family material, adopt your friend’s family and let it be a talking point.

Work Photo

“Employed” is one of the sexiest attributes a person can have. Include a photo of you at work. It can be a professional shot of you in action or a goofy shot with your coworkers. Don’t worry about the “sexiness” of your profession; at the right angle and moment, most jobs are sexy. Just think of how beautiful the guy serving your hot meat lover's pizza is looking as he makes your night.

Pet Photo

Seal the deal with a picture of you and a pet. It can be yours or a friend’s. Anyone who doesn’t like pets doesn’t deserve your attention. The happier you look with your fuzzy friend, the better.

General Photo Tips:

  • Use the largest size photo. Small photos will give grainy, gross pics
  • Don’t crop and zoom. Use a different photo
  • Aim for square pictures or use a photo editor to add borders to upload correctly
  • Use filters as you see fit, but you have to add them before you upload them
  • Use the blurry/sharp effect so that the focus is on you. Your phone probably has a “live focus” option in your camera app. Lower the aperture or “f” setting to dramatize the effect.
