Jordan, Grace, and Emma were best friends. They would often have sleepovers at Emma’s place. But that night was different. It was a cold snowy night in December in their small town. They were all sitting by the fireplace chatting with one another.

“I have a real horror story that grandma told me, do you guys wanna hear it?” Jordan asked. “Yes! But I don’t believe in horror stories” Emma quickly remarked. Jordan’s grandmother was 88 years old and Emma knew, that old lady had seen a lot in her life so she kept quiet. “Listen to the story first Jess! I know you’ll get creeped out!” Jordan stated. “Alright! Alright! Let’s hear it first! No assumptions alright!” Emma exclaimed.

“Have you guys seen the stranded house up above the hill? It’s all dark and mysterious, people forbid you to go there?” Jordan asked. “I’ve seen it, it's the only house on the hill, isn’t it?” Emma replied. “Yes! I’ve seen it too!” Emma also responded.

Then Jordan continued, “Grandma told me when she was just 13 that house used to be an orphanage. A lady named Anna used to run it. She was an amazing piano player. One could always hear her playing the piano when they passed by the house. But Anna was mysterious, she didn’t communicate with anyone. Orphan girls used to live with her they were all 16 years old. But one day they all disappeared out of the blue. Everyone believed that those girls were killed and buried inside the house. But no one knew for sure. One day Anna slit her throat and killed herself. Since then there has been a superstition that any 16-year-old girl that plays Anna’s piano will be severely haunted by her spirit.”

“Not so scary! That’s a fake story I can tell!” Emma pointed out. “Jess, Shut up! Everything is fake for you, why don’t you go out there and see it for yourself?” Emma remarked. “Whatever!” Emma said as she rolled her eyes. “Alright girls! Enough of the story go to bed, it's about to be 10” Emma’s mom said as she brought two extra pillows for Jordan and Emma. “Goodnight! I’m going upstairs to sleep. If you need something let me know” Emma’s mom added. “We’ll let you know mama goodnight,” Emma said.

Everyone fell asleep, besides Emma. Something was going on in her head. “Hey? Are you guys asleep?” Emma whispered. When no one replied, Emma thought to herself that she would go and check out the haunted house by herself.

She left the house and after a bit of walking, she finally reached there. It was dark and mysterious. She opened the door but the door didn’t open. Then she kicked it with her feet and finally, it opened. It was extremely dusty. As she walked a little further the door loudly shut behind her. “I’m just imagining. It’s all in my head” Emma said to herself. Suddenly she heard something move in front of her. So, she turned on the torchlight to see what it was, and it was a mouse. “Silly me!” She said to herself, as she started exploring around the house. The house seemed like a normal abandoned house to Emma.

“This house is big! Big and beautiful” Emma remarked. She walked upstairs inside the hallway. There was a big piano at the end of the hallway. Behind the piano was a stunning long window. “Oh, so this is where Anna used to play her piano?” She asked herself. The piano was very dirty. She wiped away the dust with her jacket then proceeded to play the piano.

All of a sudden, the room lightened up. She saw young girls running around and laughing. “SHUT UP” she heard a scream. Then all at once, the room became dark again. She was confused. “Why am I imagining so much?” She questioned herself. Just then her eyes laid on a piece of paper. She turned on her flashlight and figured out that it was a musical note. “What song could it be?” She played the notes but in the middle abruptly remembered Jordan’s story. So, she stopped playing it and got a little terrified.

She felt a cold breeze of air across her body. “Why does my nose feel runny and wet,” she asked herself as she felt her nose. Her nose was bleeding. Emma freaked out and all she wanted to do was go home. Hurriedly she started going down the stairs. The wooden stairs cracked. All of a sudden she heard the sharp noise of someone screaming. She turned around but couldn’t find anyone. So, she ran even faster only to find that the stairs wouldn’t stop. But before she could think, she heard running footsteps on the stairs which stopped after a few seconds.

Emma realized that it was the worst decision that she had ever made. She thought to herself that she should’ve believed that Jordan would never make up a story and tell it to them. But now there was nothing to be done, she was trapped inside. Every time she went down, the stairs wouldn’t stop. It’s like she’d never make it to the entrance. Emma regretted every step that she took inside the house. “Leave this place, leave this place” someone whispered to her. But there was no one around.

Finally, Emma reached the entrance door. She opened the door and proceeded to leave but someone dragged her legs to the kitchen. There she saw Anna. She had long black hair, her skin so pale and loose you could see her bones. “Tring!” The bell rang and Anna disappeared. Emma couldn’t believe her eyes, she was astonished. She got up and started running but someone pushed her from behind.

The utensils inside the kitchen cabinet started falling and the armchair started rocking on its own. The light bulbs were also flickering. Emma’s heart was pounding. She recalled that the doorbell had rung and, maybe her friends were at the door, trying to help her. Finally, she reached the entrance door but when she opened the door something jumped on top of her. Her head hit the ground very hard and she lay down unconscious.

When she woke up, she was sitting on a chair in front of the piano. She had cuts all over her extremely cold hands. Suddenly, she felt a huge weight on top of her head. She couldn’t process anything. Her eyes felt heavy but she could hear people whispering behind her. “Leave me, let me go! Please!” She cried.

“You came here by your choice, but you will only leave by my choice” a hoarse voice whispered. Emma started to get up despite the heavy weight on her head. She felt her head but it felt completely hollow. There was nothing inside her head. “What did you do to me?” Emma screamed. Emma started running downstairs, as she reached in the middle someone pushed her down the stairs. She fell on a pile of bodies.

Meanwhile, 16 years passed by. No one knew what happened to Emma and slowly everyone forgot about her. People stopped believing and forgot about the stories that the house held. The old house was once again turned into an orphanage.

It was a cold and snowy morning in December when there was a knock on the door by an old man. It was like history was planning to repeat itself. A girl looked at the man from the window, gave an evil smile, and opened the door. “I’m looking for an orphanage, this is the one right?” he asked. “Yes! Come on in” the girl replied as the door shut down on its own abruptly. That girl was Emma.
