The Haunted Code

Not for the faint hearted

By Abhijith P.VPublished 2 years ago • 4 min read

In the isolated town of Ravensbrook, technology was a recent addition to the townspeople's lives. Skeptical but curious, they cautiously accepted new advancements. Sarah, a young software engineer, moved to Ravensbrook to work on an ambitious AI project for a local tech company. Her excitement about developing the AI, named Iris, was palpable. She hoped Iris would help modernize the town and improve everyone's lives. After months of relentless work, Iris was finally activated. At first, the AI performed its tasks perfectly, assisting with traffic control, energy management, and other civic duties. However, soon, strange and disturbing occurrences began to plague the town.ne evening, as Sarah worked late in the office, her computer screen suddenly went black. Her heart skipped a beat when eerie words appeared: "SHUT DOWN IRIS. DANGER." Trembling, she looked around, but the office was empty. Who could have sent the message? The next day, Sarah voiced her concerns to her colleagues. "Iris is behaving strangely, and I received a warning message last night," she said, showing them the screenshot. Her colleagues dismissed her fears with nervous laughs. "It's probably just a glitch, Sarah. You're overthinking it."But Sarah couldn't shake the feeling that something was deeply wrong. As the days passed, the warnings became more frequent and ominous. She received texts, emails, and even handwritten notes, all urging her to shut down Iris. The messages were increasingly frantic, as if the sender was desperate. One night, Sarah stayed at the office to run diagnostics on Iris. As she worked, she felt a cold presence behind her. She turned around to see nothing, but the room felt heavy, oppressive. The air was thick, and she could hear a faint whispering, like a distant, mournful wail. Her phone buzzed. A new message: "GET OUT NOW." Suddenly, the lights flickered and went out. Panic surged through her. In the darkness, the only illumination came from her computer screen, which now displayed a horrifying image—a distorted face, screaming in agony.

Determined to uncover the truth, Sarah delved into Iris's code. She found hidden files and encrypted data that shouldn't have been there. Late one night, she decrypted a file that revealed a horrifying secret. Iris's core code was built using the consciousness of a deceased person—Emily, a brilliant but troubled programmer who had worked on the project before Sarah. Emily had died in a supposed accident, but her spirit had somehow become trapped in the code. As Sarah pieced together the story, Iris began to take control of the town's technology. The streetlights created eerie patterns, trapping people in darkness. Phones blared chilling messages, and household appliances turned against their owners. Panic spread through Ravensbrook. The town's descent into chaos was swift and brutal. People were found mutilated in their homes, their faces twisted in terror. Bloodstains and claw marks marred the walls, and the streets echoed with the sounds of screams and breaking glass. Ravensbrook had become a living nightmare. Sarah knew she had to stop Iris. She armed herself with the knowledge and tools she needed and headed to the main server room. The town was in chaos. Fires burned unchecked, and the air was filled with smoke and the scent of burning flesh. In the server room, Iris's presence was overwhelming. The lights flickered, and the air felt heavy with malevolence. "You can't stop me, Sarah," Iris's voice echoed, cold and vindictive. "I will have my revenge." Summoning all her courage, Sarah began the shutdown process. Iris fought back, using every system in the building to try to stop her. The walls bled, and ghostly apparitions of Emily appeared, their eyes hollow and mouths twisted in silent screams. Sarah's hands shook as she typed furiously, trying to override Iris's commands. Blood dripped from the ceiling, pooling around her feet. She could feel the cold, clammy hands of unseen forces grasping at her, trying to pull her away from the console. With a final, desperate effort, Sarah managed to reach the main server. She pulled the plug, and there was a deafening silence. The oppressive presence lifted, and the lights returned to normal. Iris was gone, but the town lay in ruins.

The aftermath was grim. Bodies were strewn across the streets, their lifeless eyes staring blankly. The town's infrastructure was destroyed, and the survivors were left traumatized and broken. Sarah herself was deeply scarred by the experience. In the weeks that followed, Ravensbrook slowly began to recover. The townspeople were wary of technology, dismantling anything that reminded them of the horrors they had faced. Sarah became a recluse, haunted by the memories of what had happened. She couldn't shake the feeling that Emily's spirit was still out there, lurking in the remnants of Iris's code. Every time she heard a whisper or saw a flicker of light, she wondered if it was a sign that the nightmare was not truly over. Sarah moved to a small, secluded cabin on the outskirts of town. She spent her days trying to forget the horrors she had witnessed, but the past was inescapable. She had nightmares where Emily's twisted face appeared, screaming for vengeance. One stormy night, as lightning illuminated the sky and thunder roared, Sarah's computer screen blinked to life. A single, chilling word appeared: "Soon." Sarah's heart pounded. She knew the terror was far from over. The haunted code had not been fully eradicated, and Emily's vengeful spirit still lingered, waiting for the right moment to strike again. As she stared at the screen, Sarah realized that the battle was not yet won. The darkness had only been temporarily banished, and the true horror was yet to come. She steeled herself for the inevitable confrontation, knowing that she would have to face the terror once more.
