Get into the Halloween spirit; all about trick or treating, spooky costumes, Halloween decorations and haunted houses for October 31st and all year round.
This Is Halloween
We've waited all year for spooky season to arrive and FINALLY it's here! As far back as I can remember I have always loved Halloween. It started with just dressing up in my grandma's clothes and pretending to be a zombie around the house. Eventually turned into the cheap costumes of the late 80s that consisted of a plastic apron with your favorite character on it, accompanied with a matching mask. Would you be a sweaty mess after wearing a plastic costume for longer than an hour, OF COURSE! But that's hat Halloween was all about. Mine was Care Bears and I loved it. Every year I can remember that Halloween became deal in retail. Costumes and decorations and lights where available everywhere, while I fell deeper for the glorious spooky season. This also sparked a love for the horror movie genre. While I gave myself nightmares on regular basis because of said films, I continued to delve deeper and deeper in to the spooky season.

As a lover of Halloween, I wouldn't be true to my love if I hadn't been an actor in the haunted houses that the masses flock to every October. My love of Halloween started at a young age although really I can only remember it from being school aged outside in the dark in a costume. I recall not being afraid of the dark, but feeling elated at being outside in a costume when I usually would have been inside. I still feel that spark to this day.

My dear Desean, I finally felt a chill in the air today, which is saying a great deal for me. It's been quite some time since I felt anything at all, so the shift in air temperature against my skin was almost alarming, until I realized what it was. It was nice, though. It reminded me of you. But who am I kidding. Everything reminds me of you. I wake to the morning rays sliding through the curtains of my window and I see how they fell on your face all those years ago. The smell of fresh coffee brewing, the sound of the shower running, the tinkling of laughter from the TV. You're in everything and yet you're not here at all.

A Dragged Out Halloween
2020 has been a difficult year for queer artists and the drag community on the worldwide stage. Physical shows had been cancelled worldwide and we all became bedroom queens —a queen who only creates drag in a private space, opposed to creating and sharing in live public forums. In response to this, drag queens and kings started to create online shows which swiftly became the new norm for our community with shows being streamed all over the internet and prominently on Facebook, Youtube and Twitch. Even now in October, many, many months since lockdown began, there are still online shows going on worldwide even if live performances are allowed in your local area. It truly does seem that digital drag is here to stay, at least for the meanwhile, and is the only way that I am personally able to perform due to lockdown restrictions on live performances in Scotland.

Every year October 31st rolls around, and thou I don’t usually partake in the dressing up, one can’t help but imagine all the possibilities such a day brings. It’s not necessarily socially acceptable to be running down the street dressed like a killer clown in the middle of June, as you know that’s just weird, and some frightful eye might actually report you, and I dunno, you might find some shiny handcuffs complimenting your ensemble. Thou you’re dressed as a clown, you’re most likely to miss the humor in that.
Tar Filled Heart
Cyrene floated in the current, drifting effortlessly along the coral reef. She once admired it for its beautiful, diverse colours. It had teemed with life, and different types of fish spilled in and out of every crevasse, a blossoming underwater garden. The reef served as a safe haven to many—Cyrene included. It was home to a colony of mermaids, of whom she called her own. For as long as she can remember, her mother ruled as Matriarch. As Cyrene grew older, position of Matriarch was passed along to her. The mermaids were her loved ones, and the reef was a sanctuary.

Happy Samhain. The observance of change when the old year has passed, the harvest has been gathered, animals brought in from the fields and the leaves have fallen from the trees. The earth slowly begins to die around us and the veil between the worlds is at its thinnest, allowing the spirits of the dead to travel again among the living and we welcome the dark part of the year. Beautiful!

Once upon a time, very distant from society, a magical forest exists. But little do they know that their prayers will be answer quicker than they think. because on this Halloween 2020 a prophecy will come to effect. That a new king will emerge to rule over. A hybrid king, half tree and half rock more powerful than any creature. Nothing will come on his way and will save and protect all the forest creatures for ever.

Is the Loss of Halloween the Pandemic’s Fault? A lot of people are talking about how the pandemic may essentially cancel Halloween this year. Admittingly, I even wrote a post about it, saying as much too. Recently, I started to really think about it and realized that even before the pandemic happened, Halloween was starting to vanish.

Given that 2020 has been so, so strange, I've decided that this year's Halloween costume needs to be a bit special. It's not been a normal year by anyone's standards, and 2020 deserves a costume that reflects that.

Do you ever wonder what the actual source of inspiration is, and why it holds such power when it finds us? I certainly didn’t have the time, the money, or the know-how to make an Alien Facehugger mask, yet all it took was seeing a random Facebook ad for a shirt offering free hugs and portraying the Facehugger - and inspiration took hold. I decided that I was going to become Kane, the first victim of the creepy, arthropodic parasite, for Halloween.

Halloween in the UK The commercialisation of Halloween in the UK has happened in recent years. Certainly, it was never as popular as it is now, and it seems that retailers want to cash in on what has become an international celebration. Shops are full of mass-produced plastic goodies such as witches’ hats, bats, monster masks, giant spiders, face paints in so many colours… and much, much more. It is a stark difference from my 1980’s and 1990’s childhood where most British families frowned upon “Trick or Treating”. My family never missed an opportunity for a chance to dress up as a ghost or ghoul, so we were early adopters of this modern trend that had crossed the Atlantic. We would be taken out in the car to visit elderly friends and relatives, in exchange for a few sweets. It was something that my brother, my cousins, and I would look forward to and plan for what seemed like weeks. I did not realise how out-of-the-ordinary we were until I excitedly mentioned Halloween plans to a school friend, and I got admonished for lowering myself to the status of a common beggar. The word “evil” was also mentioned. I never spoke about Halloween at school again, and I even in adulthood, I have never discussed my path into Witchcraft with any of my childhood friends. Sometimes I wonder whether it is the great unspoken, that I have been a witch for 25 years, or whether they truly just don’t’ know.
