The guns stopped firing right as the rain did at two pm. Private Muller lit a cigarette scavenged from a nearby body—a boy, who couldn’t be a day older than seventeen. Muller appreciated a moment of relative silence. Somewhere far down the line, he could still hear the big guns going, the gray horizon lit with bursts of red and orange glow. Here it was quiet.

The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years. But one night a candle burned in the window. A blue light, almost silver around the edges of the light. It flickered but remained lit despite the draft. Every pulse of the flame it brightens. A strong glow just past the window while the rest remained empty of life. It rains heavily that night; a sudden thunderstorm starts and lightning arcs in the sky, in the distance.

Kyle always combed yard sales. On Fridays he’d cruise the streets, eyes peeled for hand-lettered signs; one couldn’t count on the Internet alone. Some people just eschewed technology, saying the old ways are the best ways. Most ticked the box of the over-seventy age group on their Census forms. Silver-headed wonders, painstakingly writing checks at the grocery store, completely oblivious to how goddam inconvenient they were being. Those were the same folks that staked out a sign advertising weekend yard sales.

The deep airy whistle echoes in my ears, haunting and heartbreaking. Keening like a banshee, its loud wailing rouses me from my slumber. The supporting soft chug and sigh with the clack of striking iron keep rhythmic time with the sways of the car that rock my body back and forth.

Abigail passed away in a tragic car accident. I had been friends with her from a young age. We went to the same school, and she lived in the same neighborhood as me. I was back for spring break when the horrifying news reached me. She was driving home from college when it happened. The police said it was a hit-and-run case since hers was the only upturned car. The other speculation was the passing of an animal that made her lose balance. She had drifted into the ditch on the side of the road. Whatever it was, it devastated me, and I cried my eyes out for days. She had always been a sweet and caring person…it was so terrible and unfair that this would happen to her. But that’s how life is, inequitable and unjust. Carrying my grief, I returned to college and got busy with the workload, although my spirits were perpetually low. Then one evening, after I came to my dormitory, something bizarre and eerie happened.

The greatest regret of my life is to have accepted that stupid, devastating, and chaotic bet. But who could have ever thought, in their right minds, that something so bizarre could actually happen? We have been a group of six buddies ever since school. We went to the same high school and even college, hanging out at bars, each other’s dorm rooms, and university cafeterias. College was about to end; we would be mature adults soon, with proper jobs and responsibilities. Some of us were even engaged. Instead of easing into this new way of life, we thought our carefree, goofy, and leisurely days would soon be behind us. Something began to stir in our group, an aching desire to do reckless things, perhaps one small adventure in stupidity, just to feel alive. In this spirit, the fateful bet came into existence one evening.

Gum Shoe Blues I'd been working at this thrift store for about a week before I stumbled across the box. I say working, but it's more like volunteering. I'll save you the gory details, but needless to say that I screwed up after a night of drinking and ran into a bus stop with my car. Thankfully it was three am. There was no one in it, and the judge decided not to ruin my life over a mistake. He gave me community service and told me that it better never happen again. This was ideal since, as a college student, I don't have a lot of money. I also couldn't afford to get kicked out of college for going to jail either. So, with thirty-six weeks of community service to serve, I sat about working for my local thrift store, Charlies Second Chances.

Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. Brandon’s words echoed in my mind as I was slowly being lowered through the deep, empty blackness.

CHAPTER 1: The GOD VOICE Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. I would disagree. Does a tree make a sound if it falls, especially if no one is around to hear it? Or is it so far out in the wilderness – so far from civilization, so far removed from our conscious awareness… That does it even matter? I think you’d have bigger problems if you find yourself knowing the answer to this.
Michael LehmannPublished 2 years ago in HorrorPlaying with dolls
I like to think that I’m your average 26-year-old male, I like the ladies, video games, sports and so on. I’m just a little different. I like to play with dolls. You know what I mean, don’t kid yourself. I like to make them date, go out, have a normal life just like us. Make them into real people, if you know what I mean. Pose them the way I want, make them do whatever I want. We all have our own god complex; this is the way I handle mine. Now don’t misunderstand what I’m saying, I’m not crazy or a homo or anything like that. It’s just that I have my own way of dealing with life and its downfalls. Not that I promote my lifestyle or anything of that nature, but it just seems to have always worked for me.

“Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say.” A man says coming into view. He is wearing a black suit. The background appears to be space, with a door in the distance. “Tonight,” he says as he begins to walk toward the door. “We’ll see a story from Christine Porter, an astronaut and scientist, on a mission to Mars to collect resources and materials that may be useful for human advancement. We find out what happens when she collects the wrong resource and someone or something comes back to find it. Tonight… we enter… The Moonlight Sector.” He walks into the door, before everything goes white.

Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. But just because its happening on a distant planet shouldn’t let us ignore their suffering, professor.“
