The Cursed Spring
Moonlight latched onto the katana once Isshin, the samurai mage, unsheathed it, ready to battle the evil spirit of the cursed spring—the sharpness of the unsheathing sliced through the wind’s aromatic whispers. Standing in the shadow of the sakura tree, the samurai mage breathed slowly and steadily…strengthening his resolve. Wisps of steam quivered over the surface of the hot spring before him. The simmering water was painted with the moon’s melted reflection. Slowly and softly, the sakura leaves drifted onto the grass, their pinkish hue glowing in the moonlight. The sorcery coursing in Isshin’s veins engulfed him in a nebulous magic cocoon. The sakura leaves detected this enchanted energy…and soaked it into their soft texture.

Journey to the Moon
The moonlight scattered into glittering fragments over the undulating waves…lunar pearls from outer space. The stars above etched into heaven’s black mantle, and the crystals of shattered moonlight below…made for an enchanting sight…the heavens and the earth mirroring one another. This tableau was accompanied by the melody of waves, a soothing song imbued with the ocean’s essence. Standing beside the boat anchored to the docks, I breathed deeply…watching the waves lapping against the rocks, sending mists of water in the air.

Tears of Fire
The warrior clambered over the large boulder, stumbling onto the unpaved path that coiled around the mountaintop. As he shuffled to his feet, the air was rent asunder by the dragon’s rage-filled roar. An inferno blasted out of the dragon’s mouth and engulfed the mountaintop plateau in a blink. The showdown was inevitable, realized the warrior, with trembling knees. His heart thrashed against his chest, and his shivering body made the metal armor rattle. Overhead, dark clouds of smoke rose ominously…suspended over the mountaintop…harbingers of fire and brimstone looming above. The warrior’s resolve faltered as his knees buckled. His armored hand fell on a large stone to keep him from reeling over.

The scientist hurriedly pressed all the required buttons on the labyrinth of machines in his laboratory. His shuffling footsteps echoed off the walls lined with beeping and blinking equipment…from the plain high ceiling…and the inclined bed in the middle. On the bed lay…a lifeless representation of someone who had once breathed…laughed, and loved such a long time ago…too long to be counted.

Under The Trapdoor
I could not have been more than fifteen years old when the murders started. We lived in the suburbs at the time. A small community where everyone knew each other. The entire neighborhood was in the grips of a terrible terror…no one went out at night; most families bought shotguns and new locks. But every other week, someone would be found dead in their homes; they were primarily people who lived alone. So, all lone dwellers moved out of the community…and the killings stopped. The investigators and the town elders could not see how the killer did it. There was no reporting of any sounds of struggle or screams for help. But the dead bodies were pretty severely brutalized. There were rumored to be deep cuts on the victims’ bodies, pools of blood dried around the corpses, and terrified expressions in the lifeless eyes. No signs of breaking in. The night prowlers never once witnessed anyone coming in or going out of the neighborhood when the murders occurred. Speculations abounded, and rumors spread like wildfire… a serial killer was living amongst us!

The Treasure Beneath Infinite Skies
Pirate Supreme Ali Khursheed stood unmoved relative to his fluttering vessel. The travel-worn pirate ship drifted through the blue water currents like a feather with battered barbs. Up ahead loomed a hitherto fabled, but now quite real, treasure-laden island which the ship’s crew had longed to behold for many years. The erratically shaped land, dotted with palm trees and massive boulders, etched into the soft and soothing sky-mirroring water, was going to be the conclusion of Pirate Supreme Ali Khursheed’s long quest for the “fairy-tale” treasure. The island’s proximity and the crew’s bursting bellies almost eliminated the possibility of an individual or collective hallucination. The night before, there had been a massive feast in celebration of the mythical island’s sighting. So fervent was the feasting that food supplies were all but consumed. Thus, the entire crew’s continued survival hinged upon the island’s not being a figment of the shared imagination.

Abigail passed away in a tragic car accident. I had been friends with her from a young age. We went to the same school, and she lived in the same neighborhood as me. I was back for spring break when the horrifying news reached me. She was driving home from college when it happened. The police said it was a hit-and-run case since hers was the only upturned car. The other speculation was the passing of an animal that made her lose balance. She had drifted into the ditch on the side of the road. Whatever it was, it devastated me, and I cried my eyes out for days. She had always been a sweet and caring person…it was so terrible and unfair that this would happen to her. But that’s how life is, inequitable and unjust. Carrying my grief, I returned to college and got busy with the workload, although my spirits were perpetually low. Then one evening, after I came to my dormitory, something bizarre and eerie happened.

Graveyard Bet
The greatest regret of my life is to have accepted that stupid, devastating, and chaotic bet. But who could have ever thought, in their right minds, that something so bizarre could actually happen? We have been a group of six buddies ever since school. We went to the same high school and even college, hanging out at bars, each other’s dorm rooms, and university cafeterias. College was about to end; we would be mature adults soon, with proper jobs and responsibilities. Some of us were even engaged. Instead of easing into this new way of life, we thought our carefree, goofy, and leisurely days would soon be behind us. Something began to stir in our group, an aching desire to do reckless things, perhaps one small adventure in stupidity, just to feel alive. In this spirit, the fateful bet came into existence one evening.
