The Passenger
As I stared at my reflection I couldn’t stop my hands from pressing against either side of my face. My fingers traced the curves of my orbital bones, down my sharp nose, and over my lips. Every inch of my face felt foreign, and no matter how hard I stared, I couldn’t find any semblance of recognition. This person in the reflection meant nothing to me. My thoughts echoed through my mind like a scream in a canyon.

Thunder blasted out by Theresa’s head, causing her to bolt awake with a scream. She had gone to bed when the storm had just started, hoping for a soothing rest for a change, but she wasn’t expecting the storm to move right overhead. Something flickered in the darkness to her left. She looked over in confusion to find a window and a strange storm of coloured clouds of purple, blue, pink, and green beyond it.

My eyes fluttered and began to open as the blurriness cleared from my vision. A feeling of motion rushed over me and I felt strangely disoriented. As my eyes began to focus, I became acutely aware of my surroundings, but none of it made sense. Panic began to course through me like a runaway train, which was oddly apropos as I was ACTUALLY ON A TRAIN and I had no idea how I got there.

This scene takes place in the 1980’s the place is in London, England on a train that is moving at a high rate of speed. The horn blew and Rachel began to wake up with such a bad headache, she felt the bumps as if rocks were on the tracks. As she opened her eyes, her vision was blurry, but she saw a small, dim, light. “Where am I?” She said in a hoarse voice as she rubbed her eyes. “Stacy where are you?” As she looked around it was dark, and she could tell by the sound that she was on a train. She was sitting in a seat next to the window and it was dark outside. The dim light did not do her vision justice as she struggled to see, and her vision became clearer. She did not see anyone but quickly realized she was on a train. With no one around she became nervous.

Scream was a flashpoint in the horror genre of the mid to late 1990s. Some credit a smart marketing campaign, the film was distributed by Dimension Films, a branch of then indie powerhouse Miramax. Putting aside all that we know about Harvey Weinstein and his company, they made Scream a phenomenon through incredible word of mouth at a time when the horror genre was at the lowest of lows.

There I lay, untenably engulfed in the hopeless wallow of my deep thoughts. Or at least in the wallow of the thoughts I tried to think. The pain, it completely took all sense out of me and filled me with more of itself. It had somehow merged with my blood and coursed through my body in a somewhat well ordered attempt to turn it against itself. I can still see them now, the satisfying look in their eyes. Before the spectacle took place, the shadow of their expectation was evident. I saw it in their brows and eyes, the way they moved and talked, their auras but most especially, my sense. You see, I had always had a sense for these things ever since my first “incident.” It never occurred to me as paranoia, but more of a strength born of necessity. The necessity to live by the death of others. This sense I chose to ignore however, in the excitement of my soon coming release. I consider it a good mistake as you will soon come to find out. In due time I was knocked unconscious by the pain as a large crowd proceeded to surround me. More of them wishing for my slow death, well preferred over survival. I cared not, but could greatly do without the great noise the ruckus made.
