Bullet in the Night
It was midnight and the ocean waves around a speeding object were crashing against the moss-covered rocks as the moon reflected off the beautiful waters. There was a stillness in the air, but that would soon change.

We found a locked metal box in the basement of my grandmother’s house. I’m sure grandma probably forgot it was even there. Neither of us had ever seen this box before, which was strange since she took pride in displaying her extensive collection of random items throughout her house. Why did grandma keep this locked box hidden away in the basement? We had no clue. There were so many questions, but unfortunately, she was no longer around to answer them.

A sudden jerk wakes me from my deep sleep. I catch myself before I fall off the red velvet seat. My vision is fuzzy, and my body is weak, but I manage to sit myself up. The bright lights from overhead cause me to close my eyes. I rub them for a moment, hoping it will help them adjust. Where am I? The thought suddenly appeared in my mind. I look around, my eyes now focused. Is this a train? I look out the large window next to me and see the night sky as we zoom down a track. Why would I be on a train? I check my pockets. I can't find my phone or any ticket. I retrace my steps from what I can remember. I walked home from the grocery store down the block. When I got home, I cooked dinner and ate it in bed. I put on a movie, and did I fall asleep? I can't remember. I think someone knocked on the door. My head begins throbbing from overthinking. I need to find someone to talk to. Maybe they can help me figure this out.

Is there a better genre than horror? I don't think so. Horror movies are fun, scary, and often have some twist at the end that makes you say "What?!" They're also super-popular at the box office. A couple of years ago, I wrote an article about how Hollywood was releasing too many superhero movies - like every single weekend - and it was hurting diversity in film. But then something happened: people started noticing that horror films were getting more popular than ever before! And now we all know why: horror movies aren't just scary; they're also lucrative investments for movie studios that want to make money fast (and cheaply). So if you're looking for a new way to make money on your next project but don't want to deal with angry fans if their favorite character dies off screen…make it a horror film! Here's my list of the best selling horror films of all time:

All day it had been hot. The beach was crowded, sticky, stifling—like most places with too many people. You wandered through the day in a daze, agreeing with your companions and drinking ale as blonde as the seabirds perched on the pier. Some of the heat had evaporated with the evening, but your brow was still damp as the dusk sunk into a deep blue. One of your companions, Grant, complained that you should have bought the good-looking brunette at the bar a second round. She smiled at you and made good conversation, and her hair moved over her shoulders like sea foam across the ocean’s surface. You didn’t tell Grant what happened when you turned away for only a moment—how she had gone, how a seabird sat in her place. It cocked its head at you and squawked queerly. You could have sworn you recognized its eyes.

The somber sounds of music can be heard as the darkness of my vision begins to clear around me. Shapes can be seen as small balls of light bounce from both sides of the room. The music is familiar, it's eerie tune echoing in the canals of my ears.

Though half-asleep, Jase sensed the gentle sway of motion. He felt warm and safe and didn't want to open his eyes because he could almost feel the pressure of the bright light that pressed upon his lids. As soon as he pried his eyes open, that light would assail his Optic Nerve with sufficient intensity to cause pain. He tried to coax his mind back into slumber, but it refused to comply. Questions about the swaying motion and other odd sounds shifted his brain into overdrive. His body felt anxious to the point where his muscles twitched.

Doom Train “Buh-bump……Buh-bump.” Two loud thumps echo throughout the weary man’s skull awakening him in disarray. Swaying from side to side he suddenly grasped onto the seat in front of him to gain balance.

You’re sitting up tonight. Yes, I feel a bit better today. That’s good. Your cheeks look a little rosier. Do they? I think so. How was your day?

“Ugh, my head,” I complain, as I slide my hand up my face and rub my temple. Keeping my eyes closed, I notice the bed rocking melodically. Like a baby being swayed in the back seat of a car. It’s kind of nice. I don’t want to open my eyes because my head feels like it would explode if I did.
