The Man from Downstairs
Samira Clarke opened her eyes and drew in a deep breath. She had been dreaming of that boat again, the one on the horizon that was floating away without her. She did not know how or why but she knew somehow she was supposed to have been on that boat. Something in the way she felt a despair as she watched it drift off made her wake up every time with a certain dread in her chest. She picked up her phone and looked at the time. 3:41 am which was almost the same time she had woken up last time, and the time before that. She glanced to her side and saw her husband Jeff sleeping peacefully. Samira took a drink of her water and lay back down. She rolled over to her side facing the window and as she stared at the curtain gently being blown by the wind, she wondered where this dream came from and why she kept having it. Samira had recently been trying to contemplate herself by meditating more and exploring spirituality which was something many people had been working on during this pandemic. She had even tried some techniques for astral projection a few times. Maybe they were actually working. Her husband had been the one to start with all this spiritual stuff a couple of years back and recently they had been practising more. ‘I’ll think of that later’ she thought as she put off her thoughts to be able fall back to sleep.

The Woman Adrift
The storm hit Falcon-88 out of nowhere. It was unlike anything Shauna had seen before. Rain tore through the darkened sky like bullets, drumming against the seasoned shrimp boat. Every beat seemed to give off a deep sense of nervous resonance that vibrated throughout both the boat and the crew. A thick and milky fog covered the top of the ocean water as they sailed blindly through the night.

The Whaler's Fear
A man sits up, eyes bloodshot and sunken. The smell of sweat and alcohol hangs heavy in the air. Sunrays come in through the window, unassured if that means safety or despair. The cool black sky of night looms heavy on the soul, but the bright light of day is a good way to see something you don't want to. The man stares blankly forward recalling the dream he had just burst up from. He remembers a ship, a ship sailing east, going towards the horizon. Then, a rendition of something mad, something horrific, an amalgam from below that had ripped the boat under. No matter how much drink, how much cocaine, it was still vivid and he was still tired. It had been days, maybe even a few weeks of this torment. He lays back down, running his hands through matted hair. All he could do was hope it never showed back up.

The Cursed Tomato
It was a very beautiful day in the farm, the sun was shining but it was not a hot day. You could feel the nice morning mist and you could only hear the animals making their wake-up calls. The Heirloom Tomato field was especially beautiful and there was one tomato that stands out. If tomatoes could think, I bet he would want to be like that forever, to be left alone, but that would mean the end of days. Maybe that’s what I want, maybe that’s what humanity wants, the end. So, I touched the tomato and whispered to it, “You will always be beautiful and ripe, you will never rot. Whatever is done to you, the same will be done to the perpetrator, he who cuts you will get cut, he who eats you will get eaten and so on. No matter what is done to you, you’ll end up beautiful and ripe.” I step back and watch, this should be fun.

In the lake
It was a dead-quiet weekday night, and I was safely tucked in my single- room dorm bed, scrolling through my phone. A while before, I shut all the lights off, only to leave the flame-colored desk lamp as the only source of light in the room. It was a comfortable setting after a day of hard work and a busy college schedule. The phone screen shone bright directly into my face while I checked the last late night posts on my social media feed before bed. Suddenly, the door to my balcony flung wide open, sending the curtains reeling uncontrollably into the room. My heart thundered inside my chest as I stared, frightened, at the gaping space between the inside of the room and the outside. Nothing had alerted me of a brewing storm in the middle of spring; nor had my weather app. I posed the phone on the nightstand and reluctantly got out of bed.

Something Lurks Beneath
She spread her toes in the white sand, feeling the heat run up her legs. She loved to just lay there in the sun, soaking up the heat as a lizard would. She remembered laying in the sun with her little brother in the backyard in the summer. He would always burn no matter how much sunscreen they would put on him.

Those Who Would Not Die
At first, when people stopped dying, it was like a fairy tale. By some unknown miracle, every man, woman, and child in our world was no longer subject to death. No more funerals, no more mourning, no more lost loved ones. Death had somehow been banished from our world and we all rejoiced.

The Man from Medan
It is with a shaking hand that the Captain raises a tumbler of arak putih to his lips. The white liquor, cheap and easy to acquire around the Malay peninsula, is coarse but offers a comforting familiarity. The night is black and still. The crew are restless.

Arrival
We had been told stories of the great ships carrying the strange, white men. Travelers from other tribes had brought the white man’s items to trade; things we had never seen. They tell us stories of their encounters with them, and their golden hair and blue eyes. Our elders warned us that they could be dangerous, others believed they could be friends. I couldn’t help but wonder about these men. Who are they? Where did they come from? Why is their hair the color of the wheat we harvest? What do they want? These questions ran through my mind like rapids, as I watched the distant ship on the horizon grow closer to the shore.
