Delhart's Spirit
Sylvia Delhart ate her lunch in the dining room of Regent’s Estate with a sense of eventual loss. Running to conclusions, she figured she will have to find a way to live on her own, the mere thought of losing everything made her dizzy. Thinking this may be her last proper meal, she ate slowly, a mouthful at a time. After her lunch was over, she left the room and strutted towards the door behind the stairs. She knocked.

The Mysterious Barn
There is a small town nestled in the heart of another, called Heights Lake, which has always been a charming, safe place for most of its locals. A place where one could keep their doors unlocked and kids can play late at night in the park. It may seem strange to some, as the way of the world doesn’t really allow for such things, but the truth is, not that many people know it exists. For travelers these days, prefer to take the fast roads, the highways, leaving less and less to travel down the backroads that lead to this enchanting place; a road called Mercer Street. It is the only road that will lead you right through the town and out again, turning into Main Street as you enter back into its surrounding town of West Maidenhead. There you could find every shop, restaurant, fire house, police department, and library, as well as runner and bicyclist. It’s the vein the leads to the heart of this magnificent town.

Reed's Literary Horror Review of 'Fright Train' (2021) edited by Charles R. Rutledge and Scott T. Goudsward
Opening with a run-on sentence is a baller move. It's the reader's introduction (well... past the introduction anyway) to the anthology. That's a seriously "high risk" maneuver that could instantly throw off any reader. For me, it had damn well better be a declaration of how amazing every word that follows is. It stuck out so much I had to include it in my review.

Driver for the Dead. Top Story - July 2021.
She came to me while I slept. I was blurry eyed and still half asleep when I agreed, fetching my keys and wandering to the car. It was once in the car, with only the moon and the green of traffic lights scattering color across sodden blacktop, that I realized what was happening.

The Cave
Guiding in a wilderness therapy setting is my favorite job I’ve ever had. One week I was in the girls group working with four other staff, Rickell, Katie, Vileena and Jake. We were camped a little too close to a road about a mile and a half from where it ended at a major road that lead out of the field. Our site was about 12 miles south of Dugway in western Utah, a military base well known amongst conspiracy theorists and UFO enthusiasts.

Order Of the Heart
Mary Walker sat as the truck bounced down the road, quickly approaching the ageing farmhouse and barn. She had not been here for over a year, but it felt like a lifetime, so much had changed since she bought her last dozen eggs outside of a barn. The pandemic came and seemed to go away until the new variant seemed to create the living death.

The Foul Smell of Whores (continuation)
The body of this devil slumped to the side of the pole she was tied to. Her knees were as cragged as the trees near her home, and her toes were not toes, but talons that came to a sharpened point. It was a common thing to smell burning flesh; the smell cascaded across the land and could be smelled for miles. Most of the children spoke of a hog roast, and out of innocence, they stuck their noses into the air to enjoy the aroma of what was mistaken for pork. The parents knew better but refused to ruin the illusion of innocence. At one point, they filled those tiny shoes and listened to the same orations of generations before them.

NOBODY WANTS A PIECE OF THE CHOCOLATE CAKE
No one knew what was inside the old barn. It sat there for centuries, yet everyone was afraid to go inside. Urban legends will have you shaking in your pants after you hear about all the murders. No one even gets close to the barn, for it is said if you do, your blood will be shed.

The Barn
It was a muggy evening. The south was always hot and humid during the summer, but tonight was the worst for Mildred, or Milly to her friends. She was soaked in sweat and more was running out of her pores. Her clothes stuck to her like a wetsuit. The old hay on the ground was sticking to her exposed legs and short shorts, while the new, bundled, hay blocked her from the entrance to the dilapidated barn she was currently hiding in.

The Barn Yip
A lone figure trudged through the soaked gully. The droplets bounced off his rough leather overcoat, the limits of its thick hide being tested. Protecting his shoulder-length hair was a leather Akubra. It wasn’t too necessary, after weeks in the bush his hair had the same greasy waterproofing as a duck’s feathers.
