Curiosity Killed the Kat
Twelve year old Katherine Moore drew patterns in the dirt while she patiently waited for the first responders to do their job. The scenery outside the barn was serene in comparison to the commotion in the house. The chill of the summer night air wrapped around her like a blanket that they give to victims on those crime shows her Momma would sometimes watch. Kat never imagined that she would ever be in a situation similar to those shows, yet here she was. She imagined getting interviewed by the police would be scarier, but it was more… draining than anything else. A voice interrupted her sea of thoughts.

Excavate
Maisie shrieked, shrinking helplessly from the decayed femur dangled inches from her face. Her brother’s laughter rang like a kettle, hissing and muddling her wails. He swung it past her chin, soil untangling in clumps that fell to Maisie’s chest. Her screams bubbled into sobs, the dirt crumbling more with each taunting shake, sprinkled from the tangle of roots. In the dim light of the barn, it looked like spiderwebs, thin and sticky with pests.

Grandma
As Angel was riding in the back of her uber on her way to her grandmother’s house watching as the trees seemed to zoom past. She had never met her fathers mom, she was wondering what she was like and what the house looked like. It’s funny you’d think in her 16 years on this planet she would have at least met the woman. But with mom and dad having to travel more and more for work this is the only thing they could come up with between them for the summer. She started passing fields foggy and laying heavy with the morning dew as first light had barely hit. It seemed to go on forever with no houses or signs of civilization. Then in the distance barely able to be made out at first was an old ranch house with fences all around and an old barn close by. She couldn’t imagine what she’d be helping her grandma with, it looked like it hadn’t even been lived in for years. Then the sound of the car hitting gravel and slowing down brought her back to the present as she prepared herself for whatever she was about to encounter. She hoped she was one of those sweet old ladies that smelled like cookies… not one of those that you’re scared to be near and reaked of back medicine.

Trust
I was so happy when Papa chose me to accompany him to the barn. He always made a big deal about how he needed someone responsible to help him with the equipment. "They're not just tools," he'd remind everyone with his flinty index finger emphasizing the point, "and they're certainly not toys. I have expensive equipment in there that helps me keep our farm in business and food on the table. I won't abide any horseplay that might do any damage to any one of this family's investments." He was always so stern about anything in the barn. So he never took just any one of us when he needed some help.

Yellow Clues
The oak of the old barn slightly breathed out as the sunset faded into a windy fall night. It was cold, and a chill crept through my windbreaker even after the workout I just managed to knockout. What was odd, however, was seeing a few pieces of yellowish paper sticking out from the slits in the barn's crumpled wood. Their placement caught my immediate attention.

Harmless
Jeffrey swung across the barn, beam to beam from a rope secured to the highest support in the roof. Dust falling from the rafters filtered through the waning dusk sunlight, peeking through gaps in the deteriorating wooden siding. Over 100 years old, it should have been dead, yet the old barn had strong bones.
