Pasta in a can: EW! No way!

Chef Boyardee Ravioli in a can: Heck yes!

As a child and even as an adult, I would choose to eat a can of pasta if it's Chef Boyardee. Growing up when dinner plans were tight the Chef always made his way onto a plate or bowl and brought a smile to my face. Because who could go wrong with some Chef Boyardee?!

Lately, I've been on a nostalgia trip and wanted to write about a brand that I cherished as a kid and even introduced to my kiddos when they were old enough to eat solids.

Chef Boyardee is a household name in America, thanks to his canned pasta products that have been enjoyed by generations of families. But did you know that the man behind the brand was a real person? His name was Hector Boiardi, and he was a talented chef who had a passion for bringing Italian cuisine to the masses.

Boiardi was born in Piacenza, Italy in 1897. He began his culinary career at a young age, apprenticing in a local restaurant at the age of 11. He later moved to Paris and London to further his training, and then to New York City in 1914.

In New York, Boiardi worked as a chef at several high-profile restaurants, including the Plaza Hotel and the Greenbrier Hotel. He also catered the wedding reception for President Woodrow Wilson in 1919.

In 1924, Boiardi moved to Cleveland, Ohio to open his own restaurant, Il Giardino d'Italia. The restaurant was a success, and Boiardi's pasta dishes quickly became popular. Customers loved his sauces so much that they began asking him to sell them in jars.

Boiardi obliged, and he began bottling his sauces and selling them to local grocery stores. He also started selling pre-cooked pasta meals in cans. These products were a hit, and Boiardi soon became a household name.

Boiardi continued to innovate throughout his career. In 1937, he introduced his signature product, Chef Boyardee Ravioli. This product was a major success, and it helped to make Boiardi a millionaire.

Boiardi died in 1985 at the age of 87. He is considered to be one of the pioneers of canned pasta, and his products continue to be enjoyed by families around the world.

In addition to his culinary skills, Boiardi was also a successful businessman. He founded the Chef Boyardee Company in 1928, and he grew the company into a multi-million dollar enterprise. Boiardi also donated millions of dollars to charities throughout his lifetime.

In 1946, Chef Boyardee was acquired by American Home Products for nearly $6 million. This allowed the company to expand its production and reach even more customers. Boiardi remained as a consultant for Chef Boyardee until 1978, sharing his culinary expertise and helping the company grow.

In 2013, the town of Milton, Pennsylvania erected a statue honoring Hector Boiardi at the entrance to the factory. This was a fitting tribute to the man who had brought so much prosperity to the community.

At the time, Plant Owner, Steve Smith commented and I quote, "We have a great legacy. My employees are so proud of the Chef Boyardee brand and the legacy of Hector..." end quote.

Even one of the employees commented that it was their livelihood and put their children through college.

Chef Boyardee has been featured in pop culture, including the TV show Seinfeld. In one episode, Kramer feeds his horse beefaroni, which causes the animal to break wind uncontrollably.

Today, Chef Boyardee products are produced by Conagra Brands. The company continues to innovate and offer new products to its customers.
