Wonder Woman Is Bigger Than Any Actor
But Can the DCU Separate Diana Prince from Gal Gadot’s Legacy?

Wonder Woman has stood for values like justice, compassion, and courage for over 80 years. As a key figure in DC, she ranks among the publisher's most iconic heroes, alongside Batman and Superman. So, when Peter Safran and James Gunn began their overhaul of the DC Universe, fans asked a central question: when will Diana Prince return?
Bringing Wonder Woman into the new DCU seems like an obvious choice. She is one of the most famous female superheroes ever, has a rich comic book history, and is essential for DC. Still, figuring out the film direction for the character is more complicated than just casting a new actress.
This complexity doesn’t come from Gal Gadot's portrayal. In my opinion, Gadot was great in many ways as Diana Prince. She brought sincerity, determination, and warmth to the character. She captured Diana's natural compassion and her quest to find the good in humanity. These traits are key to Wonder Woman's status as an inspirational figure. The real challenge was never about Gadot's effort. Instead, the main issue came from Diana's cinematic journey becoming linked to broader discussions outside of Themyscira.
Appreciating the Performance While Recognizing the Controversy
The problem wasn't about Gadot's commitment to the role; rather, the issue was how Diana's cinematic journey became intertwined with socio-political discussions that go far beyond the fictional world of Themyscira.
Valuing the Portrayal Amidst External Debates
People can appreciate a performer's artistic skills while also recognizing that their public image has become complex and controversial.
Many fans have a strong affection for Gadot's version of Diana Prince. Her 2017 debut in Wonder Woman received praise for finally showcasing Diana, ending a long wait for a significant live-action film about the superheroine.
However, the previous DC cinematic universe was uneven. While Wonder Woman received widespread acclaim, the sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, divided audiences, though most critiques focused on the film's script, pacing, and direction rather than Gadot's performance.
Ultimately, Diana Prince has the essential qualities to anchor the DCEU as one of its key figures. But like other characters from comics, her journey was shaped by the franchise's larger narrative choices.
At the same time, another challenge emerged: how an artist's personal identity interacts with their professional work.
Today’s media consumers have unprecedented access to the lives of entertainers compared to the past. Through social media, a celebrity's personal background, beliefs, and public statements often influence the audience's view of their creative work.
Consequently, Gadot has sparked mixed reactions due to her comments about Israel and the geopolitical conflict, along with scrutiny regarding her citizenship and service in the Israeli military.
Critics say these factors change how they view her public image, while supporters defend her by pointing out different aspects of her background and life experiences. Regardless of personal opinions, one clear dynamic has emerged:
For some people, Wonder Woman's identity has become tied not only to Diana Prince but specifically to Gal Gadot.
This situation creates a significant hurdle for any future cinematic reimagining.
Could a New Wonder Woman Still Face Backlash?
Would casting a new actress as Diana Prince in the DCU completely separate the character from her cinematic history?
Maybe.
Throughout comic book history, audiences have shown a willingness to accept new interpretations, easily accepting several recasts for iconic heroes like Spider-Man, Batman, and Superman. A new face in the role can completely redefine a character.
Yet, today’s fandom operates under different circumstances than in the past. Online discussions often elevate fictional characters into symbols in larger cultural debates. While a new actress might deliver a fantastic performance as Wonder Woman, some audience members may continue to project their feelings about the previous version onto her.
Nevertheless, this dynamic shouldn’t deter DC from using Diana Prince. Instead, it indicates that the studio should approach her return with care.
Could Another Wonder Woman Carry the Legacy?
One interesting option is to focus on another character who has taken up the Wonder Woman mantle.
Wonder Woman's rich lore goes far beyond Diana herself. Numerous key figures in DC Comics, like Nubia, Hippolyta, Artemis, Donna Troy, and Yara Flor, have taken on parts of this legacy.
James Gunn has already shown a willingness to step away from traditional norms and explore beyond standard superhero tales.
Look at the Green Lantern mythology as an example. Instead of sticking to the most well-known Lanterns right away, the DCU is exploring the extensive history of the entire Green Lantern Corps.
A similar approach could work well for Wonder Woman.
DC could first establish Themyscira, the Amazons, and their detailed history before figuring out how Diana fits into the larger cinematic universe. Following the journey of another Amazon would highlight that Wonder Woman is much more than one person in a costume.
She represents an enduring idea.
But Would Audiences Accept Wonder Woman Without Diana?
This is where it gets tricky.
Even though various characters have held the Wonder Woman title, Diana Prince remains the version most audiences recognize. For many, Wonder Woman and Diana are the same.
Unlike the Green Lantern Corps, which allows multiple heroes, the identity of Wonder Woman has traditionally been tied closely to one central figure.
As a result, sidelining Diana is a bigger creative risk. While it could succeed with a strong story, audiences might wonder why DC seems to be avoiding the hero they want to see.
Wonder Woman’s Legacy Should Outlast Any Controversy
Ultimately, the character of Wonder Woman surpasses any one performer.
Gal Gadot's portrayal represents only one period in a long history rather than defining the character.
Audiences can both appreciate Gadot's contributions to Diana Prince and recognize the complex feelings that now surround the link between the actress and the superheroine.
These two views can coexist.
For James Gunn, the main challenge isn’t figuring out if Wonder Woman should return—her comeback is undoubtedly needed.
Instead, the challenge lies in reintroducing her in the DCU in a way that allows fans to rediscover what made Diana so iconic. Whether that means premiering a new version of Diana Prince, featuring a different hero from Amazonian stories, or exploring Themyscira's past, Wonder Woman's key trait remains her ability to embody an idea greater than any single individual.
After all, the true essence of Wonder Woman has never only been about who wears the armor.
It has always focused on the core principles of hope, empathy, and courage.
